However, Thompson was not to be denied, pulling away again to secure the victory.

“It was a bit of a slow start for me in both sets,” Thompson said. “But my error count was pretty low all day and I didn’t really give him anything cheaply. I served well and got a fair few free points.”

Aside from needing to rally from a set down against Victorian Dayne Kelly in his second round, it was a polished performance from Thompson all week; his serve and forehand looking particularly threatening.

Thompson will now move on to Canberra, where he’s confident his body will stand up to the rigours of several weeks of consecutive match play and provide him with an opportunity to make it a triple treat.

“The body’s going well,” he said. “I’ve had the odd niggle, but that’s normal, and the last few days haven’t been really long matches so that definitely helps.”

South Australian Luke Saville also enjoyed a resurgent week in Traralgon, defeating second seed Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan and John-Patrick Smith on his way to the semifinal, where he was eventually halted by Zemlja.

The doubles final on Saturday was an all-Australian affair, with first seeds Matt Reid and Smith defeating the unseeded duo of Matthew Barton and Matthew Ebden 6-4 6-4.

The title was the second at ATP Challenger level for Reid this month, after taking out Las Vegas with American partner Brian Baker.

Jordan Thompson has claimed consecutive titles after defeating fourth seed and former world No.43 Grega Zemlja in the final of the Latrobe City Traralgon ATP Challenger.
