{"id":11897,"date":"2016-07-11T08:13:48","date_gmt":"2016-07-10T22:13:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/nsw\/?p=11897"},"modified":"2016-07-11T11:18:03","modified_gmt":"2016-07-11T01:18:03","slug":"de-minaur-runner-up-at-wimbledon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/nsw\/news\/2016\/07\/11\/de-minaur-runner-up-at-wimbledon","title":{"rendered":"De Minaur runner-up at Wimbledon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australian teenager Alex De Minaur was unable to hide his dejection after falling a set short of joining some of the tennis greats on the Wimbledon honour roll.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the 17-year-old acknowledged it had been an impressive week at the All England Club, where he had recorded his best result at a junior Grand Slam after reaching the semifinals at both the 2015 US Open\u00a0and Australian Open 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a great week. You\u2019ve got to take the positives out of the week,\u201d he said after falling 4-6 6-1 6-3 to Canadian fifth seed Denis Shapovalov on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just another opportunity to get out on court and get better.\u201d<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fkHgrJH4b2c\" scrolling=\"yes\" longdesc=\"no\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowtransparency=\"true\" style=\"max-width:100%;\">Your browser does not support iframe<\/iframe>\n<p>After taking the opening set,\u00a0De Minaur faded as his powerful left-handed opponent began to settle into the contest on No.1 Court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very disappointed, to be honest. This is a match that I believed that I could win,\u201d De Minaur said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won the first set but I still didn\u2019t think I played well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave away a couple of cheap games here and there and I sort of did the bare minimum to get over the line in the first set.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he lifted up his game and I didn\u2019t. He started hitting some big balls and I was still trying to find the middle of the racquet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hoping to join the likes of Roger Federer, Stefan Edberg, Ivan Lendl and Bjorn Borg as a junior champion at the All England Club, De Minaur was particularly gutted at his serve misfiring in the biggest match of his life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously it\u2019s a big court and all that, but I honestly don\u2019t think that affected me not being able to not find my rhythm with my serve,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very interesting thing because all tournament I\u2019ve been serving really well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it came to me as a bit of a shock not being able to find the court with my serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Spain-based Sydney-born talent will return home hoping to gain a wildcard into a Challenger event next month in Europe, then contest the US Open boys\u2019 singles before trying to transition to the professional ranks.<\/p>\n<p>John Alexander (1968), Debbie Freeman (1980), Pat Cash (1982), Mark Kratzmann (1984), Todd Reid (2002), Luke Saville and Ashleigh Barty (both 2011) remain the only Australians to win Wimbledon junior singles titles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australian teenager Alex De Minaur was unable to hide his dejection after falling a set short of joining some of the tennis greats on the Wimbledon honour roll.
