{"id":11863,"date":"2016-06-30T10:50:27","date_gmt":"2016-06-30T00:50:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/nsw\/?p=11863"},"modified":"2016-06-30T10:50:27","modified_gmt":"2016-06-30T00:50:27","slug":"kellerman-weekes-named-in-paralympic-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/nsw\/news\/2016\/06\/30\/kellerman-weekes-named-in-paralympic-team","title":{"rendered":"Kellerman, Weekes named in Paralympic team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Top Australian wheelchair tennis players Adam Kellerman (NSW), Ben Weekes (NSW), Dylan Alcott (VIC) and Heath Davidson (VIC) have qualified for the Paralympic tennis event.<\/p>\n<p>The quartet\u00a0will grace the courts at the Olympic Tennis Centre at Barra Olympic Park on 9-16 September.<\/p>\n<p>Kellerman, ranked 11th, and Weekes, the world No.26, will contest the 52-player men\u2019s singles event, one of six events on the tennis program.<\/p>\n<p>The others are women\u2019s singles, men\u2019s and women\u2019s doubles, and quad singles and doubles.<\/p>\n<p>Kellerman reached the third round at London 2012\u00a0\u2013 his first Paralympics \u2013 and with Weekes progressed to the second round of the doubles draw.<\/p>\n<p>This will be Weekes\u2019 fourth Paralympic appearance, after Athens (2004), Beijing (2008) and London; his best results were second-round finishes in Athens and London.<\/p>\n<p>World No.1 Alcott heads the entry list for the quad singles event and will be joined in the field by fellow Aussie Heath Davidson, who gained entry via a\u00a0Bipartite Commission Invitation place.<\/p>\n<p>Davidson is currently ninth in the world quad rankings.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first Paralympic tennis appearance for both Alcott and Davidson, the former the reigning Australian and US Open quad singles champion.<\/p>\n<p>Alcott is currently riding a 25-match winning streak, with his last singles loss coming back in January.<\/p>\n<p>Tennis at the Rio Paralympics\u00a0will be a\u00a0hardcourt event, with\u00a0a 10,000-capacity centre court and 3,000-capacity secondary show court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing the most successful Paralympic Tennis Event in history at London 2012, I am confident that this year\u2019s event will be an equally memorable competition,\u201d said ITF president David Haggarty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWheelchair tennis has become one of the most popular Paralympic sports thanks to its outstanding athletes and great personalities, and we are looking forward to a great atmosphere and some fierce competition.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Top Australian wheelchair tennis players Adam Kellerman (NSW), Ben Weekes (NSW), Dylan Alcott (VIC) and Heath Davidson (VIC) have qualified for the Paralympic tennis event.
