Sam Stosur bowed out of the WTA Ladies Open Lausanne at the quarterfinal stage on Friday, while fellow Aussie Matt Ebden went down to John Isner at the ATP’s Hall of Fame Open.

Stosur missed out on a semifinal berth in Lausanne with a straight-sets defeat by France’s Fiona Ferro.

The Australian No.5 had scored a morale-boosting 6-3 7-5 win over American Allie Kiick the day before to repeat her effort at last year’s tournament in making the last eight.

But the 2011 US Open champion was unable to maintain her momentum on Friday, suffering an 80-minute loss to Ferro.

The world No.134 has at least arrested her slide in the rankings and is set to rise to around 131 next week.

The 98th-ranked Frenchwoman, through to her second semifinal of the season, now faces Bernarda Pera, who beat China’s Xinyun Han 6-0 5-7 6-3.

Defending champion Alize Cornet recovered from a set down to beat Natalia Vikhlyantseva and earn her place in the last four of the claycourt tournament, coming through 4-6 6-1 6-3.

The French player will next meet Tamara Korpatsch, who saw off Jil Teichmann 3-6 6-0 6-1.

In Newport, US, Ebden suffered a quarterfinal defeat by Isner, who hit 24 aces in a 4-6 6-3 6-4 victory.

Australian No.7 Ebden is projected to rise from No.110 in the rankings to inside the top 100 next week.
