After several days of rain delays, Australian No.2 Ajla Tomljanovic finally got on court in Nottingham – and began her tournament with a win.

With matches moved indoors due to persistent rain making play impossible on the outdoor grass courts, Tomljanovic disposed of qualifier Danielle Lao 6-2 6-3 in 67 minutes.

The sixth seed will next face Britain’s Harriet Dart, a three-set winner over Vera Lapko.

Astra Sharma, the world No.92, also made progress when 74th-ranked Magdalena Rybarikova retired after losing the first set 6-1.

Fellow Aussies Ellen Perez missed out on a place in the last 16 as she went down 6-3 6-4 to Serbia’s Ivana Jorovic, ranked 104 places higher at No.103.
