Sam Stosur has posted a comprehensive win over Irina-Camelia Begu in Doha to move through to the second round of the WTA Qatar Total Open in Doha.

Stosur’s 76-minute 6-4 6-2 win sets up a meeting with No.8 seed Angelique Kerber, one of the game’s hottest players in 2018.

Starting the year at No.21, Kerber has bolted back inside the top 10 after winning the Sydney International and reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open. She also went undefeated in singles when representing Germany at Hopman Cup.

Stosur, on the other hand, has struggled for form this year, winning just of her five matches – beating Carina Witthoeft in the first round in Sydney – and currently ranked 44th.

The Australian spectacularly turned the tables on Begu, having lost their only previous meeting last year in straight sets on clay in Charleston.

Stosur narrowly trails Kerber 3-4 in their head-to-head series, but has lost four of the pair’s past five meetings.
