The top eight seeds are safely through to the last 32 of the 14/u Australian Championships after first-round matches were completed on Monday.

On a rain-affected day at Melbourne Park, second seed Casey Hoole and No.3 seed Edward Vo – the defending champion – both won in straight sets to join tournament top seed Cooper White in the second round.

On Sunday, White won his first-round match 6-1 6-0 over wildcard William Clifford.

Hoole and Vo were similarly dominant; Hoole, of Queensland, beat Viktor Sirucek 6-2 6-1 while South Australia’s Vo scored a 6-0 6-1 win over qualifier Ethan Cook.

Fourth seed Haru Sonton was forced to fight harder, requiring three sets to overcome Jeremy Jin.

Sonton’s 6-2 5-7 6-2 win sets up a second-round clash with Luke Velutic of Victoria.

Also progressing was No.5 seed Derek Pham, a 6-0 6-0 victor against Qwyn Eden Quittner, while another commanding winner was seventh seed Antonio Li, who beat Callum Stringfellow 6-3 6-0.

No.8 seed Rahul Desai progressed to the last 32 after a three-set battle against Matt Harper.

Girls’ 14/u matches got underway late on Monday afternoon at Melbourne Park; top seed Anastasia Berezov cruised into the last 16 following a 6-1 6-1 win over Rio Tanabe.
