2017 Club Championships Wrap Up

29 May 2017 |

The Mudgee District Tennis Club Championships are over for another year, having wrapped up their final weekend.

The 2017 iteration of the classic tournament had a different feel to it, with the entire event played over three weekends in the month of May.

The final events on the fixture list were the Junior Doubles as well as the Mixed Doubles.

The juniors opened the day, with a number of tightly fought matches leading to three entertaining and quality finals.

The girls doubles final saw sisters Imogen and Anthea Kearins defeat Shayna Hickey and Tahlia Cooke, while the boys draw ended with Jason Meers and George Mills coming up against Jayden Cooke and Toby Turner in a match that ended with Meers and Mills lifting the trophy.

In the Open’s Division it was a battle of experience to end the tournament run, with Tom Collins and Will Wiseman using their longer career experience to beat young Sam Roth and Maguire Barrow.

After pool matches were played out, the Division 2 Mixed finals were played, with mother and son team Joshua and Cristina Meers playing against husband and wife combo Elizabeth and Patrick Brennan.

It was the couple-team that won out in the end in the family final, with the Brennans coming out on top in a double-tiebreak match, 7-6 7-6.

The day ended with a scintillating match-up, as Sheridan Roth and Peter Robinson contested the Open’s final against Carolyn and Matt Smith.

The Smith partnership proved too strong in the end, taking out the final 7-6, 6-3 to claim the honours to wrap-up the 2017 season.

The victory put Carolyn on the Honours board for the second time in the 2017 Championships, and signaled an end to the three-weekend series.

The three-weekend format for the Club Championships will be reviewed in coming months, and it is a great sign for Mudgee tennis to see the competition thriving.

After it’s return in 2015, the Championship has gone from strength to strength, and remains the most prestigious honour that the Club offers in its season.
