Day 1 of the 2017 Mudgee District Tennis Club Championships were held on Saturday on a picture-esque Mudgee day. Day 1 saw the Junior Mixed Doubles played first up in the morning and the Senior Singles followed in the afternoon. This was the first day of a new format for the Championships and it’s proven to be a success.
In the Junior Mixed, play commenced at 8.30am and each team played the other teams in the competition once. At the conclusion of the pool stage, the top two sides then went onto play the Junior Championship final. Sam Roth and Shayna Hickey made the final and were up against Will Wiseman and Tasmin Cox.
After a hard fought out battle, the eventual champions were Will Wiseman and Tasmin Cox, coming away victorious 7-6,6-2 .
Head Coach Nathan Wilkins was full of praise for the teams who played, saying it was refreshing to be able to watch his students play against each other.
“It’s the first time the Mixed Junior Championship has been played since 2003, so it’s been good to see the players out there playing against each other. The standard of tennis was high.”

The senior singles event followed with the Double Elimination format trialled. Essentially, a player needed to be defeated twice to be knocked out of the competition adding a new dimension of excitement to the Championships.
In the Women’s draw, the eventual finalists were Anna Macdonald and Carolyn Smith. The final score 6-1, 7-6 in the favour of Anna Macdonald. This was Anna’s second win in the singles event getting her name back onto the honour board.
For the Men, last year’s singles runner-up Cameron Anderson took on Angus Macdonald in the final. Anderson proved too strong in the end defeating his opponent in straight sets 6-2,6-2.
May 21 will be next Championship day with Junior singles played in the morning and Men’s & Women’s Doubles in the afternoon. Both Open’s and Division 2 Championships will be held. Interested participants are encouraged to sign-up at mudgeetennis.com
