About

The Montville Sports and Recreation Ground is located about 3 km south of Montville on the Montville-Maleny Road. It was formerly a thriving pineapple farm and part of the original selection of Thorvald Weitemeyer, later owned by the Ruddy and then the Glover families.

In 1925, the pineapple farm gave way to the first sporting facility built at the grounds: the tennis courts. This Sports and Recreation Ground was a local response to meet community needs for a sport and recreation venue in Montville to replace the Village Green which had been re-developed into a cultural precinct. The ground was managed by a group of five trustees until it was transferred to the Montville Village Association in 1993 to manage in trust for and on behalf of the people of Montville.

In the early 1950s an official tennis club was formed to manage the courts. This club operated for over 60 years until it lapsed at the end of 2013. On 5 June 2014, on behalf of the Montville Village Association, the Management Committee of the Montville Sports and Recreation Ground invited expressions of interest from community groups to form a tennis club at the Montville Sports and Recreation Grounds.

As Trustee of the sports ground, the Montville Village Association, through the Sports Ground Management Committee, assumed management of the facilities and assets of the club in trust until a new club could be constituted.

Assets included two tennis courts, one in fair condition with lighting and the other in need of re-surfacing, a shed and a modest bank balance. The successful applicant would take over the lease of the tennis courts and club house and agree to sign a seven-year lease agreement.

After many months of negotiation the Montville Tennis Club was incorporated on 7 September 2018 following a members’ meeting held on Tuesday 13 August 2018 with the agreement of the Montville Village Association. Mr Wayne Parcell was elected inaugural President and Dr Brett Abbenbroek inaugural Secretary.

The Club’s vision is to offer the Montville community a friendly and welcoming environment in which to play tennis and socialise with old and new friends. We welcome all players, young and old, new and experienced.

Successful fundraising, ongoing membership drives, donations and successful grant applications have resulted in new courts, fence, clubhouse and other upgraded amenities for our members and guests.  Tennis coaching, mixed social tennis and ball machine training are regular weekly events which continue to expand to encourage physical activity, social networking and promotion of the game of tennis in the community and beyond.
