Latest News October 7th 2014

Good afternoon everyone:

I thought I’d update members with details of a couple of functions and take this opportunity to call for volunteers.

Firstly:  we brought the Official Saturday Open Day forward by one week to Saturday next, 11th October.  The day begins with the launch of our Junior Program ANZ HotShots from 10.00, which is also the commencement of the “Come and Try Tennis Day”.  The Junior Section runs from 10 – 12.30 (approx.) with a Sausage Sizzle from 11.00.  There is a raffle with some great prizes collected, donated by Rob Endenberg, Director of Junior Development and his Coaches.  Come along, bring your children, grandchildren to meet our crew and start them on the path to health & happiness through tennis at Kensi!

I’m especially indebted to Rob Endenberg, his family and coaches for their untiring efforts to get our Junior Program off the ground.  What a team!  What a tremendous asset for our Club!

Then, from 1.00 p.m. (early start this week only) come – or stay – for Social Tennis with the Saturday ‘regulars’ and visitors.  Afternoon Tea will be served at 3.00 p.m., then back on to the courts for some more top tennis!  If you’re still standing later in the afternoon, come along to the Happy Hour from 5 – 6 and invite your spouse/spice/ partners/significant others to enjoy a glass of bubbles and strawberries, accompanied by warm nibbles from our elderly  pie warmer & drinks from the bar at generous Club prices.

We could do with some extra hands this Saturday morning to help serve cool drinks, ice-creams, tea/coffee, maybe some bar work as the adults look for other refreshments; help to cook the sausages, etc.  If you can assist, I’d be pleased to hear from you.  The quickest way to contact me is via my mobile: 0438 843 148.

A huge, and exciting event scheduled at the Club is the hosting of the “Win a Wild Card” Tournament to be held on Sunday, 19th October from 8.00 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. This is a Mixed Doubles Tournament for entrants over the age of 18 years.  The winners receive direct entry to the Australian Open on a Wild Card.  We are the only Club in Adelaide (perhaps in all of South Australia) to host this event!  Some of our members may care to enter.  If so, please contact Tennis SA via their website for details.

Tennis Aust. want us to provide a “canteen” for this event.  I’m organising the food and drinks required and have had invaluable assistance from the Ladies Bowls President, Jody Kraguljac, who is calling for volunteers and preparing a roster for help in the kitchen.  We will be making sandwiches and selling hot food from early in the day, throughout the day, to an unknown quantity of spectators and players – though I expect that the total number could be in the hundreds.  I’m sure we will also do a great trade at the bar.  I’m eager to hear from volunteers for both areas – and if we have plenty of volunteers, there will be more time for everyone to enjoy watching some great tennis.  If you are available to help, please let me know as soon as possible and I will pass your details to Jody for the roster.

This is a great opportunity to showcase our Club and make a sizeable sum to add to our ever-decreasing coffers.

Our Green Keepers have done a marvellous job in bringing the courts back to life and making them look better than ever.  As I’ve mentioned before, we were successful in obtaining a grant from the Dept. for Recreation and Sport for the purchase of 16 new nets and a ball machine.  Thanks to two of our members, Noel Nietz for supply and Glenn Roder for installation of the new nets, the overall impression of our facilities will be second to none!

Don’t forget that the Wine Dinner, previously scheduled for Saturday, 18th October, has been re-scheduled for Saturday, 8th November at 7.00 for 7.30.  Cost is $28 per person for a 3-course dinner with a bottle of wine per table of 4.  The Wine-Maker – yet to be advised – will be our Guest Speaker.  The booking sheet for this event is on the noticeboard in the Clubrooms so be sure to lodge your booking as numbers are limited.  We require payment in advance to confirm the booking please – which must be received a week before the dinner, i.e.,  Saturday, 1st November.

Still on the hunt for volunteers………….. We are looking for some-one to co-ordinate Wednesday Night Tennis.  Rob Endenberg has offered to help me on alternate nights in the early stages but it’s not something either of us is keen to add to our portfolios this season.  It’s not an onerous job but some-one with the time and energy to co-ordinate and play tennis on Wednesday night would be a very welcome contributor to the life of the Club!

Happy Tennis everyone and I look forward to seeing you on the court, or at a function, at some stage this season.

With all good wishes,

Gloria Sumner,

President.
