  Good Morning Everyone:

These last few months have been so busy that I’m not sure where to begin.  It is appropriate that it should be with a huge vote of thanks to our Major Sponsors: Skye Cellars, Auldana; Romeo Bros. Erindale Foodland; and Simply Fresh Fruiterers, Erindale.

Skye Cellars have been sponsoring our Tennis Club since 2010 and in more recent times have “come on board” to sponsor the whole Club with a generous cash donation whilst continuing to support the Kensi Gardens Tennis Club labelled wine.  We recently held a ‘Wine Dinner’ with wine from the Currency Creek and Ballast Stone Wineries supplied to us by Skye Cellars.  The wine was a real hit; and as a token of appreciation of our allegiance, the Proprietors of Skye Cellars have offered a special deal to our members for December.  This wine normally sells for around $20 per bottle and we have been given the opportunity to buy it for a flat price – for each of the varieties listed on the order form – of $12.95 per bottle, sold by the case of 12 (including mixed dozens).  As with our “Kensi Club” wine, the orders are delivered free of charge to anywhere in mainland Australia.  You may remember that one of the other fund-raising benefits of the “Kensi” wine is that we receive $1 for every bottle sold.  I have attached an order form for the four varieties of Kensi wine, together with an order form for the Currency Creek & Ballast Stone wines.  You won’t regret buying any of this wine for your Christmas Stockings or for the Festive Table.  Please return the completed forms to me, either by Aust Post to Kensington Gardens Lawn Tennis Club, P.O. Romeo Bros. Foodland Stores were outstanding in their generosity to us for the Tennis Australia “Win a WildCard Event” held on 19 October at our Club.   At very short notice they provided everything we needed by way of donation.  I would urge you to reciprocate by supporting their stores.  You will be pleasantly surprised by their range of goods & competitive prices – if you aren’t a current dedicated customer to whom this is not new information!

Likewise with ‘Simply Fresh Fruiterers of Erindale’.  Their quality of produce is second to none and they too remain exceedingly generous in their support of our Club.

An announcement I should have made quite some time ago but deferred because I thought it might be appropriate for the whole-of-Club-Newsletter since Joan Young is a member of both Tennis and Bowls, is as follows:

Heartiest Congratulations to Joan on being awarded Life Membership of the Mid Week Ladies Tennis Association.  The person who forwarded the information concluded by saying: “Obviously this is a big honour as there are not many life members – she’s been a great contributor for over 40 years.”  Well done, Joan Young!

Whilst congratulating members I should like to add my congratulations to Rob Endenberg, our recently-appointed Director of Junior Development.  Rob has built our ANZ HotShots Junior Tennis Program from the ground up.  We now have 15 children registered for the HotShots Program and 5 in the Junior Squad.  The Program runs from 10.00 to 1.00 on Sunday mornings and is a joy to watch.  They will have their Christmas Break-Up on Sunday, 14th December from 11.30.

All members and family are invited to join us for a community sausage sizzle in a picnic atmosphere.  All we ask is that you register your name, number attending and whether you will bring a savoury or sweet plate to share.  The list is on the Tennis Club Noticeboard.  We are providing a gift under $10 for each child, so if you wish to join us and bring along a child in your care, you may wish to include a small gift-wrapped present to place in the box with others.  Please place a tag on the gift to indicate whether it is for a Boy or Girl.  From 10.00 a.m. adults may enjoy strawberries and a complimentary glass of bubbles prior to the Sausage Sizzle.

Among Rob’s many talents is that of Web Designer.  Part of our membership of the Tennis S.A. ANZHotShots Program is free access to the Tennis S.A. Website for a link to our own Club.  Rob has built a great site which receives many hits and from it we have gained a lot of interest and quite a few new members.  Please  and you will see what I mean.

Another facet of the Junior Development Program is further sponsorship of our Section.  Lavazza Coffee Company has provided a coffee machine and free training for our HotShots Coffee Club.  We have been operating this enterprise from 10.00 – 12.30 Sunday mornings where we sell great coffee and delicious cookies.  All cookies are donated by members so it’s a good little fund-raiser for the Juniors.

An initiative of the Junior Development Team was to encourage volunteering at the Club.  We invited 6 ‘volunteers’ to attend Barister Training at the Lavazza Training Facility in exchange for not less than 3 sessions working in the HotShots Coffee Club on Sunday mornings of their choice.  At the end of the three-hour training session Volunteers are presented with a certificate stating that they are qualified Baristers.


I then provide a letter of commendation stating that the Volunteer has served on a community program at our Club.  We have extended the invitation to young people above the age of 16 who may be relatives of Tennis Members.  This not only assists the Club, it provides professional training and the opportunity for students and others to apply for casual work in cafes, etc.  The daughter of one of our members participated in the first session and is eager to contribute in the New Year.  One of our senior members who participated in the same session has offered to open the HotShots Coffee Club on a Wednesday afternoon.  It’s early days for this initiative and I’m keen to see how it is taken up.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you would like further information, or better still: happy to join the Volunteer Group.


Speaking of Volunteers……….. Please consider how you may contribute to the life of the Club apart from enjoying our beautiful courts and facilities.  One of our members maintains supplies for the toilets and ensures that they are clean and tidy;  he also waters the pot-plants and keeps an eye on their condition.  Another manages our bar; another disposes of the empty bottles;  another purchases, stores & distributes the tennis balls for us;  yet another maintains our nets… and so the list goes on.  Occasionally we need casual help at the bar for social functions and in February we need help to set up for the Brunch.  The collective age of our ‘Brunch helpers’ in the past was about 500 years, so we are looking for some fit, strong, younger fry to take on the challenge!

The Brunch in February is to be held on Sunday, 8th and helpers need to arrive at 8.00 a.m. Yes, that’s right, Sunday morning at 8.00!  It’s a great atmosphere with members moving about like worker-bees with everyone pulling together to prepare for the guests to arrive at 10.00.  At the end of the festivities those same worker-bees (or their ‘subs’) restore the furniture to the Clubrooms, clean & tidy the courts and collapse in a heap together to enjoy a well-earned beverage or two.  At least that’s how the oldies do it.  Maybe Youth will have a better system.  I have attached a Volunteer Form and hope that members will consider volunteering for at least one duty on one occasion.

The Brunch is our major fund-raising event of the season and I would encourage members to start planning to attend at 10.00 a.m. – 1.00 p.m. on Sunday, 8th February.  Invite your friends and make up a group.  As it was for last year, we are offering 1 free ticket to the person who books a table of 10 or more.  Tickets cost $35 each payable in advance by cash please (at time of booking) to any member of the Committee.  As usual, there will be a free glass of bubbles or soft-drink on arrival.  Subsequent drinks will be available at generous Brunch Prices.  We can cater for 110 so it will be a matter of booking early to ensure you don’t miss this popular event.

I’m pleased to advise that our regular supply of Adelaide Hills Cherries will be available again this year.  $18 for a 2kg box.  Buy a box or share.  (Pre-payment is required).  Last orders and money to Liz Scholefield by Friday, December 12th.  Date of delivery is Monday, December 15th.  Please add your name to the list on the Bowls Social Noticeboard if you require any of these delicious goodies.

On this note, all that remains is for me to wish you a very Merry Christmas and wonderful New Year:  to enjoy it in good health, happiness and prosperity.
