Kensington Gardens Lawn Tennis Club

President's Archives August 2014

August 2014:

It would be great to see as many of you as possible at tonight’s Special General Meeting at the Club at 7.00 p.m. to be followed immediately by the AGM.  The Special General Meeting is to approve changes to the Constitution and to set up a new management structure for the Club.  Instead of a ‘General Committee’ consisting of Bowlers & Tennis Players pretty much in equal measure, the KGB&TC will be administered by a Board with a Chairman, Secretary, Finance Director, Tennis Rep, Bowls Rep., plus three ‘Independent Members’ who are not members of a Section Committee (of either Bowls or Tennis).  As it happens, the current nominees for the Executive of the Board are Tennis Members, so please come along and lend your support to the establishment of a sound, enthusiastic and dedicated Board of Management led by three eminent members of our Club.

Just another update about activities at the Club:  The first piece of very exciting news is that we were successful in our application to the Department of Recreation and Sport for a grant of $5,000 “to assist with Sport Equipment” (the formal title) for 16 new nets and a ball machine.

Next: We have been successful in our bid for the Junior Development Program to be sponsored by Dunlop Slazenger.  Rob Endenberg (Director of our Junior Development Program) and I have had separate meetings with the Dunlop Rep. and things are looking very promising indeed.  I expect to be able to provide details in the next Newsletter.  Sean Patton (our Marketing Officer) and Rob are working together to promote the Juniors through Dunlop/Slazenger and other activities within and for the Club.

On the Marketing side of things: Sean is a human dynamo!  He has already made contact with some corporations who have indicated a willingness to support the Junior Program in particular and the Club in general and we’re very optimistic about the outcome of his endeavours.

I’m pleased to advise that David Perry has agreed to continue to co-ordinate Monday Night Tennis in the same successful format as last Season.  If you’re interested in continuing, or trying this competition for the first time, please contact David on 0419 812 155 for details.

We are looking for a VOLUNTEER to co-ordinate Wednesday Night Tennis.  Paul Reynolds, who was the co-ordinator of last Season’s Wednesday sessions, has had to relinquish some of his activities at the Club due to other heavy commitments he has to juggle.  Paul said it’s not an onerous task (he just can’t fit everything in at present) and can provide directions to the App he uses to contact the ‘regulars’. I’d be grateful to hear from anyone who is willing to give this a shot.  Please contact me on my mobile 0438 843 148 or at my home email account: [email protected]

We are also looking for Volunteers to work on the small canteen we propose to create for the regular Sunday morning (9.00 – 11.00) Hot Shots Program.  Parents and Carers of the children participating in this (initial) 10-week Program are our targets for tea/coffee/smoothies/cookies/scones. The children are the targets for the products of our Popcorn Machine and Smoothies/fruit treats.  The Lavazza Coffee Machine Co. is providing us with a [free] coffee machine, along with training for its use.  Please contact Rob Endenberg (Director of Junior Development) on 0432 994 170 if you would like to assist for any, or all of these sessions.  If we have a group willing to help then it needn’t be a regular commitment for any individual (I have already received an offer of help from a member which is very encouraging.)

Special thanks to Rosie Budenberg on behalf of the Mid-Week Ladies who has agreed to run a fundraising campaign throughout the Season to support the Junior Program.  The campaign is supported by local businesses who are keen to provide prizes for the regular raffles conducted twice per month at the Club.  We are very grateful to Erindale Simply Fresh Fruiterers, Wattle Park Specialty Meat Store (both on Kensington Road) and to Skye Cellars for their generosity.  I hope you will support them.  You won’t be disappointed with your purchases!

Copies of the 2014/15 Entertainment Book are still available for $65 via email to me at[email protected] or mobile: 0438 843 148.  Delivery direct to the purchaser is free until the end of August so don’t miss out on this offer which also benefits the Club to the tune of $13 for every book purchased through our Club.

The first Social Event for this Season’s diary will be held on –

Saturday, September 13 from 4.00 – 5.30p.m.  Free Wine Tasting at the Club – hosted by Skye Cellars includes Sausage Sizzle provided by Tennis Club ($2 for sausage, bread, onions, sauce).  The wine will be chosen by Skye Cellars and the Wine-maker will be present to discuss everything you wanted to know about the wine!

The Official Tennis Season opens at our Club on Saturday, 11th October.  More details in the next Newsletter.

Kind regards,

Gloria Sumner

Tennis President.
