President Update – April 2021

Hello to all our GTR Tennis Club Members & Potential New Members

I would just like to introduce myself and update you on things at our club now that we are hopefully settling well into our “COVID Normal” phase. It certainly has been an unsettled 12 months and we hope we can now sustain our current ability to use our facilities with a few restrictions. We are fortunate to be playing a sport outdoors where there is less risk and where any age/ability/gender can participate, whether it be competition, coaching, social, casual or for family fun and exercise.

I have been a member of this club for 35 yrs (a committee member for the majority of this time) since I moved into the Bayswater area and our kids have gone through the coaching programs, juniors and now adult night comps so as a family, we have a long association with this great club.

We held our COVID-delayed AGM on Fri 26th Feb, 2021 with a small number of members present (7) and a few apologies. There were 3 significant long-standing resignations from our dedicated President (Peter Coath), Secretary (Adrian Batt) and Treasurer (Greg Askew). On behalf of the Club, we would like to thank them for their tireless contributions, particularly given the regular AGM was postponed for 6 months and they willingly continued their roles through these tough COVID times, beyond their original plans to resign last August.

I have accepted the nomination of President until the next AGM (Aug 2021) along with the following committee members:

Stephan Mikhail from Tennis Vic (Club Development Officer) also attended the AGM and is keen to support us improve our function and membership base so we look forward to working closely with him. We hope to switch over to a new platform (ClubSpark) which will improve membership renewals and assist with the administration of the club and ease the burden on the committee – watch this space!

We recently raised $1300 at the Bunnings BBQ and wish to thank the volunteers who helped out to achieve this great result. Unfortunately, we had 2 court lights and associated equipment require replacement so this work consumed those funds. We also received some grants from various sources but our membership fees are a major source of income to maintain the club and we have taken a significant hit with only being able to offer 6-month fees but we are seeing more new social memberships, which is a promising outcome. Fundraising and increasing our membership base will need to continue to be a key focus. 12-month fees will be due again in July 2021 for existing members and New Members can join now with up to 3 months bonus if joining prior to July 2021.

We are keen to see more people join the committee and appreciate any amount of support that anyone has to offer.
