Great result for Goulburn at Wayne Arthurs Cup

Goulburn region tennis was well represented by four of its promising juniors at the Wayne Arthurs Cup on 9-10 April 2016.

The Tennis Victoria Regional Team Event was contested by 10 country regions and 6 metropolitan association teams.

Jack Bassett (Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club), Fraser Bennett (Yarrawonga Lawn TC) combined with Remi Serra (Shepparton Lawn TC) and Olivia Stevens (Tatura Lawn TC) to form a formidable combination representing the Goulburn region.

The annual event is held at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club and involves the best 10 and under tennis players from all areas of Victoria. Teams are grouped into pools and each match consists of two mixed doubles sets and four singles sets.

The first day of the competition resulted in Goulburn defeating Mornington Peninsula 5-1, losing to (eventual winner) Bayside-Moorabbin 4-2 and winning convincingly 6-0 over East Gippsland. As a result Goulburn finished second in its pool.

On the second day, Goulburn was defeated 5-1 by Waverley Tennis. This meant Goulburn played against Northern Suburban Junior Tennis Association in the playoff for seventh and eighth place. In another close encounter, the scores were 3 sets all after the completion of the tie. A single game was the difference and Goulburn was unlucky in defeat to finish eighth overall, but was the second highest placed country region.

The Goulburn players acquitted themselves extremely well against outstanding competition, especially the boys. Bassett won all five of his singles matches and Bennett won four out of five singles matches over the weekend.

Goulburn team manager Jason Bassett said the players were continually commended for their good sportsmanship during the tournament. He said it was a great effort by all players involved and hopefully it inspires these players and others from the Goulburn region to play representative tennis against the best players they can.
