“How to win a Grand Final Twice in One Day

From our President, Graham Ihlein:

On Saturday 1 September a small crowd of nine watched an enthralling match of quality, friendly tennis. It was the Bayside Adult Mixed Rubbers Section 3 Grand Final between Glenhuntly and Parkdale.

After losing one of the first sets 6-0, the Glenhuntly team recovered to be behind by 4 games at the half way mark.
In the Mixed rubbers the Glenhuntly team played great tennis to be on the cusp of victory.
Susan Stagg and Michael Stagg won their mixed rubber 6-2, 6-2.
Nola Hardie and Tony Luxmore had four set points to take the second set before losing the last five points of the tie-breaker.

Everyone thought Glenhuntly had won by one game, so the drinks and food were opened and photos were taken.

About fifteen minutes later it was discovered one of the scores was a game out – so it was a draw and each mixed pair would have to play a tie-breaker each to get a clear winner.
But there were problems – one of the Parkdale team had left and some alcohol had been consumed. And the light was fading fast (indeed Susan had to take her glasses off because she only had prescription sunglasses with her).

So the fourth Parkdale player returned and the two tie-breakers were played:
7-3 and 3-7.
So the two tie-breakers had to be played again. Nola and Tony then won 7-5. But Susan and Michael were down 5-2 and then 6-4, before saving several more points to win 10-8 in the dark.

It was a relief to win (twice) and not have to come back the next week to get a result.

Well done to the whole team (including the other team members Captain Loretta, Ray and Cyril) who contributed strongly through the season.”
