Glenhuntly Tennis Club

Hi to all Glenhuntly Tennis Club Members and Supporters

15 September 2020 |

We hope you’re coping ok with restrictions on your activities. For many of us the hard part is not having the let-out of playing tennis. But things are looking up.

28 September to start tennis hitting again?

We can look forward with quite a bit of hope to being able to play in a couple of weeks’ time.  If all goes well, Victoria’s 14 day average of coronavirus cases will soon be under 50. There were 35 cases from yesterday’s testing, so the daily average over the last 14 days is down to 54.4 cases. If the average falls to 50 or below, then on 28 September Victoria is likely to ease some restrictions and singles social tennis hitting and some coaching may be allowed again.

So, what now?

For players: Your priority should be to get fit and ready to play again. Some of us have to lose weight and have affair way to go to get fit. For others it’s mainly a matter of a bit more exercise over the next two weeks.

We recommend you try out the free exercise programs being put on by our Bayside Regional Tennis Association and Moorabbin and District Junior Tennis Association. There’s weekday lunchtime and Sunday morning live webinar with skilled instructors showing you each exercise. Alternatively, you can watch the webinars later at your own pace. They include stretching, aerobics, pilates and tennis exercises. Go to www.baysidetennis.asn.au and look for “Upcoming Webinars”.

Our Club:     We’re also getting the courts ready to start tennis again – five of us are safely doing one and a half hours of essential maintenance one day each per week. We hope to have the courts in tip-top condition over the next few weeks. If you want to help, please let us know.

Special thanks to Club Member Rodney Boonsinlapa. One of our two wheelbarrows collapsed beyond repair. Rodney, who works in the nursery at Bunnings Mentone, stepped up and donated us a quality new wheelbarrow.

26 October to start Saturday Adult Competition?

If Victoria’s 14 day average of coronavirus cases falls to under 5, then on 26 October restrictions would be substantially eased, probably allowing social doubles tennis and possibly Saturday Adult competition.

Our Bayside Regional Tennis Association have asked us to submit adult comp teams by Friday this week and for teams to be ready to start playing with short notice. So, our adult teams should be ready to start playing anytime from late October.

We also could organise Club Championships for club members anytime from October onwards.

For our juniors we also have options. Whilst the Saturday and Sunday morning junior competitions probably won’t start again till January 2021, our strong juniors could be given matches in the Adults for experience.  Also, we’d like to run our own tournament sometime from October-January for juniors within our Club (with trophies).

Finally, bear in mind that what we’ll be able to do depends on the coronavirus case numbers being favourable.

Cheers,
