NOVAK Djokovic isn’t the only one scoring aces in his tennis career.

Tennis Australia has appointed Brenan Park Tennis Centre’s head coach Joe Porley as a talent development coach in a national program to help develop elite junior players.

The Bossley Park resident said he was delighted to be one of 20 coaches in NSW selected to assist the next generation of tennis superstars.

“It’s good, it’s nice to be recognised and nice to know that Tennis Australia are getting behind the coaches,” Porley said.

Porley has coached many prodigious proteges in his 16 years at Brenan Park, including Lucas Bertovic, 11, Lara Palmer, 16, and 15-year-old Miladin Tepsic, who is currently competing in the International Tennis Federation Juniors event in New Zealand.

He said watching young players develop into future champions is “why I do what I do”.

“It’s basically job satisfaction when you see somebody develop into a good player and there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing a young junior progress and enjoy it at the same time,” he said.

Porley will continue working at Brenan Park Tennis Centre, running a Tennis Australia training squad for elite players, as well as attending tennis camps and national competitions.

“My philosophy is to motivate kids and more or less to encourage them to try and do better and have fun at the same time,” he said.

“If they don’t enjoy the sport at a young age, they’re not going to commit themselves and do their best.”
