{"id":9796,"date":"2016-11-02T20:25:48","date_gmt":"2016-11-02T09:25:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=9796"},"modified":"2016-11-02T20:30:55","modified_gmt":"2016-11-02T09:30:55","slug":"defending-champ-local-star-knocked-out-in-epic-day-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2016\/11\/02\/defending-champ-local-star-knocked-out-in-epic-day-5","title":{"rendered":"Defending champ and local star out after epic Day 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A shock first round departure and defeat for a local favourite has capped off an epic day 5 at the <strong>Apis Canberra International<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Reigning 2015 champion <strong>Asia Muhammad<\/strong> (USA) was spectacularly eliminated in the first round by unseeded challenger and <strong>World No.<\/strong> <strong>252\u00a0Varatchaya\u00a0Wongteanchai<\/strong> from Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>The almost three hour match went to three sets, Muhammad winning the first set tie-break,\u00a0Wongteanchai took out the tie-break in the second, going on to claim\u00a0the win, 6-7(0), 7-5, 6-4.<\/p>\n<p>Canberra star\u00a0<strong>Alison Bai\u00a0<\/strong>was also defeated in her singles\u00a0match, however will play on in her doubles partnership with Aussie mate, <strong>Lizette Cabrera <\/strong>(QLD).<\/p>\n<p>In singles, Bai drew\u00a0fifth seed <strong>Arina Rodionova<\/strong> (VIC),\u00a0<strong>World No. 185 <\/strong>and\u00a02016 Perth Tennis International Champion.<\/p>\n<p>It was a\u00a0hard fought match, Bai saved match point with an ace in the second game. However her more experienced opponent, Rodionova, proved too strong in the windy conditions, defeating Bai in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.<\/p>\n<p>The saving grace for\u00a0Bai on Day 5 was her doubles win with Cabrera. The duo took a comfortable straight sets win late in the day against America&#8217;s <strong>Jennifer Elie<\/strong> and <strong>Katy Dunne<\/strong>\u00a0(GBR) 6-3, 6-2.<\/p>\n<p>The five remaining women\u2019s seeds all progressed to the second round. Top seed <strong>Risa Ozaki<\/strong>\u00a0(JPN) had a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 win over Australian qualifier <strong>Abbie Myers<\/strong>\u00a0(NSW). Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hiroko Kuwata<\/strong>\u00a0[2] survived a scare in her opening match, losing the first set to West Australian <strong>Jessica Moore <\/strong>before\u00a0regrouping to win the 2 hour 31 minute match 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3. Sixth seed and 2015 Canberra International finalist\u00a0<strong>Eri Hozumi<\/strong>\u00a0(JPN) also progressed, earning\u00a0a tense 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Katy Dunne from the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Four Australians have today progressed into the quarter-finals to lock-out the bottom half of the men\u2019s draw.<\/p>\n<p>19-year-old Victorian and 2014 US Open Junior Champion <strong>Omar Jasika<\/strong> caused the upset of the day in the men&#8217;s draw, out-gunning sixth seed and runner-up at last week\u2019s <em>Latrobe City Traralgon ATP Challenger<\/em> <strong>Grega Zemlja\u00a0<\/strong>(SLO), Jasika winning 6-1, 6-4 in just 55 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Jasika will meet qualifier <strong>Greg Jones<\/strong> in Friday\u2019s quarter-finals after the New South Welshman eliminated 18 year old <strong>Max Purcell<\/strong> in straight sets.<\/p>\n<p>Wildcard entry <strong>Daniel Nolan<\/strong>\u00a0(VIC) defeated qualifier <strong>Steven De Waard<\/strong> 6-2, 6-2. And ninth seed <strong>Marc Polmans<\/strong>\u00a0(VIC) eliminated four time 2016 ITF Pro Circuits champion,\u00a0<strong>Shuichi Sekiguchi <\/strong>(JPN) also in\u00a0straight sets.<\/p>\n<p>The order of play for Day 6 includes the remaining four second round singles in the men\u2019s draw.
