They are always strong tournaments at this level and you\u2019ve got to be ready to go from the first game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Polmans, currently ranked world No.262, was elevated to the position of ninth seed after the late withdrawl of Korean <strong>Hyeon Chung<\/strong> and, as a result, sits in the bottom half of the draw facing <strong>Sriram Balaji<\/strong> \u2013 one of four Indians playing this week \u2013 before potentially reigniting his\u00a0Australian Pro Tour rivalry\u00a0with American <strong>Jarmere Jenkins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve played him a lot recently, so we know how each other plays,\u201d Polmans said of the possible\u00a0second round encounter. \u201cIt should be pretty interesting, hopefully I can get there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Polmans, who played doubles at the event last year, will be making his maiden singles appearance, and expressed his approval of the conditions in Canberra.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a little bit of altitude which is good, it should help on my serve,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Jordan Thompson will lead the strong field of Australian men in Canberra. The top seed, buoyed by recent title wins on the ATP Challenger tour in Ho Chi Minh and Traralgon, will be looking to make it three in a row as his campaign opens against countryman <strong>Matt Reid<\/strong> later in the week.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson\u2019s half of the draw is crowded with some of the tournament\u2019s better-known names; a potential quarterfinal against No.8 seed John-Patrick Smith is in the offing with either Traralgon semifinalist, Argentinian <strong>Marco Trungelliti<\/strong> (4), or James Duckworth (5) possibly waiting in the wings beyond that.<\/p>\n<p>Smith himself has a tricky encounter with Launceston champion <strong>Blake Mott<\/strong> to negotiate first up while <strong>Matthew Ebden<\/strong> and <strong>Luke Saville<\/strong> \u2013 also a member of the final four in Traralgon last week \u2013 lurk dangerously near Thompson at the top end of the draw.<\/p>\n<p>Turning attention back to Polmans\u2019 half, second seed <strong>Yoshihito Nishioka<\/strong> of Japan will be looking to improve upon his performance last week where he fell early to Saville.
