{"id":9741,"date":"2016-10-30T19:18:01","date_gmt":"2016-10-30T08:18:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=9741"},"modified":"2016-10-31T11:50:59","modified_gmt":"2016-10-31T00:50:59","slug":"top-male-seeds-progress-despite-dampening-weather","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2016\/10\/30\/top-male-seeds-progress-despite-dampening-weather","title":{"rendered":"Top male seeds progress despite dampening weather"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The top four seeds in qualifying have progressed into the main draw of the Apis Canberra International, including global talents world No. 99 <strong>Y<\/strong><strong>oshihito Nishioka<\/strong> (JPN) and Germany\u2019s <strong>Daniel Masur<\/strong>, alongside Australians <strong>Steven De Waard<\/strong> (QLD) and <strong>Greg Jones<\/strong> (NSW).<\/p>\n<p>Despite a 15-minute rain delay and blustery conditions, there were some long rallies in Jones\u2019s exciting match against eighth seed, <strong>Nathan Pasha<\/strong> (USA). The match went to three sets and a tiebreak, before Jones defeated Pasha 3-6, 6-4, 7-6.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was of a high standard, it was a little bit tricky with the wind as well, so it&#8217;s just one of those days you&#8217;ve got to try and survive,&#8221; Jones said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I like making it hard for myself, so that was another week of me doing that but I&#8217;m happy to win.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>World No.99 <strong>Yoshihito Nishioka<\/strong> from Japan breezed through his final qualifying match in straight sets against South Australia&#8217;s Nathan Eshmade.<\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s qualifying began today with three of the sixteen matches unable to be completed due to late rain. Several Australian\u2019s progressed, including upset of the day, <strong>Gabriella Da Silva Fick<\/strong> (AUS) who fought hard in a lengthy women\u2019s match against third seed in qualifying, <strong>Maddison Inglis<\/strong> (AUS) 6-7, 3-6 -11 in one hour and 49 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Da Silva Fick wasn\u2019t the only wildcard to cause an upset. <strong>Monique Adamczac<\/strong> (AUS) defeated the second seed in qualifying, <strong>Naiktha Bains <\/strong>(AUS), in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 despite bad weather interruptions.<\/p>\n<p>The top seed in the women\u2019s draw also it made through to the final round of qualifying, Italian <strong>Georgia Brescia<\/strong> [1] winning comfortably 6-0, 6-3 against Australian, <strong>Mary-Ann Liu<\/strong> (VIC).<\/p>\n<p>First round of men\u2019s main draw starts tomorrow. The day is set to highlight three all-Australian singles matches on Centre Court, including qualifyer <strong>Steven De Waard<\/strong> (QLD) taking on wildcard player <strong>Thomas Fancutt<\/strong> (QLD). Seventh seed <strong>Matthew Barton<\/strong> (NSW) [7] will play wildcard <strong>Daniel Nolan<\/strong> (VIC) and <strong>Chistopher O&#8217;Connell<\/strong> (VIC) will compete against <strong>Omar Jasika<\/strong> (VIC) in the afternoon. The event is made up of two professional tennis tournaments, men\u2019s and women\u2019s, both part of the <strong>Australian Pro Tour<\/strong> &#8211; a series providing opportunities for players to earn world ranking points and prize money.
