{"id":9735,"date":"2016-10-30T14:28:31","date_gmt":"2016-10-30T03:28:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=9735"},"modified":"2016-10-30T14:28:31","modified_gmt":"2016-10-30T03:28:31","slug":"tomic-and-tere-apisah-join-apis-canberra-international-field","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2016\/10\/30\/tomic-and-tere-apisah-join-apis-canberra-international-field","title":{"rendered":"Tomic and Tere-Apisah join Apis Canberra International field"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Queensland\u2019s Sara Tomic, Victorian Sally Peers and NSW player Seone Mendez, plus Abigail Tere-Apisah from Papua New Guinea have been awarded wildcards into the main draw of the Apis Canberra International ITF women\u2019s event, starting Tuesday 1 November at the Canberra Tennis Centre in Lyneham.<\/p>\n<p>Tere-Apisah has shown great form in 2016, shaving half of her world ranking points from 931 to a current career high of 543 in the world. Since September, the 24-year-old has reached three semi-final rounds at Australian ITF events including her first ever appearance in a $50,000 ITF event, Bendigo, Cairns and Brisbane, plus the quarter-finals in Tweed Heads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a good couple of weeks,\u201d Tere-Apisah said. \u201cI\u2019ve gained a lot more confidence and I\u2019ve just trusted my game more as the matches have gone on. I\u2019ve had good preparation and it just gets better and better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After spending four years in the US\u00a0at Georgia State University, Tere-Apisah, aged 24, took a year off before playing the Pro Tour last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t do too well,\u201d she admitted. \u201cbut this year I\u2019ve had a good training environment with the right people around me and it\u2019s working out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tomic (QLD), sister of world no. 25 Bernard Tomic, has had a good year on the ITF circuit, with doubles and singles titles in Egypt. 18-year-old Tomic reached the semi-finals in Mildura and semi\u2019s at the Australian Open Junior Championships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are really pleased to announce the inclusion of another three Australian women and a very strong international contender to the field for the Apis Canberra International,\u201d said Tournament Director <strong>Ross Triffitt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Rounds 1 and 2 of women\u2019s qualifying commenced today and will play out through to Tuesday November 1.<\/p>\n<p>The men\u2019s event continues today, with round 3 of qualifying now underway. The men\u2019s main draw will be released today and is scheduled to start at 10am tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s draw can be found on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tournaments\/pro-tournaments\/australian-pro-tour\">Australian Pro Tour website<\/a>.
