{"id":9009,"date":"2016-07-06T16:20:38","date_gmt":"2016-07-06T06:20:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=9009"},"modified":"2016-07-06T16:20:38","modified_gmt":"2016-07-06T06:20:38","slug":"paralympic-team-in-canberra-before-rio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2016\/07\/06\/paralympic-team-in-canberra-before-rio","title":{"rendered":"Paralympic team in Canberra before Rio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>2016 Australian Paralympic tennis team\u00a0members, Adam Kellerman, Ben Weekes, Dylan Alcott and Heath Davidson were in Canberra this week. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The quartet\u00a0graced the Canberra Tennis Centre indoor courts in Lyneham for two days at an Australian Paralympic training camp.<\/p>\n<p>It is the last time the squad\u00a0will be together before\u00a0they represent Australia in Rio at the 2016 Paralympic tennis event on 9-16 September.<\/p>\n<p>World No.1 <strong>Alcott<\/strong> heads the entry list for the quad singles event and will be joined in the field by fellow Aussie, <strong>Heath Davidson<\/strong>, who gained entry via a\u00a0Bipartite Commission Invitation place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kellerman<\/strong>, ranked 11th, and <strong>Weekes<\/strong>, the world No.26, will contest the 52-player men\u2019s singles event, one of six events on the tennis program.<\/p>\n<p>This will be Weekes\u2019 fourth Paralympic appearance, after Athens (2004), Beijing (2008) and London; his best results were second-round finishes in Athens and London.<\/p>\n<p>Davidson is currently ninth in the world quad rankings.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first Paralympic appearance for both Alcott and Davidson, the former the reigning Australian and US Open quad singles champion.<\/p>\n<p>Alcott is currently riding a 25-match winning streak, with his last singles loss coming back in January.<\/p>\n<p>Tennis at the Rio Paralympics\u00a0will be a\u00a0hardcourt event, with\u00a0a 10,000-capacity centre court and 3,000-capacity secondary show court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing the most successful Paralympic Tennis Event in history at London 2012, I am confident that this year\u2019s event will be an equally memorable competition,\u201d said ITF president David Haggarty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWheelchair tennis has become one of the most popular Paralympic sports thanks to its outstanding athletes and great personalities, and we are looking forward to a great atmosphere and some fierce competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em style=\"font-weight: inherit\"><strong>The official team will be announced by the Australian Paralympic Committee at the end of July.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2016 Australian Paralympic tennis team\u00a0members, Adam Kellerman, Ben Weekes, Dylan Alcott and Heath Davidson were in Canberra this week.
