{"id":7743,"date":"2015-11-01T19:44:11","date_gmt":"2015-11-01T08:44:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=7743"},"modified":"2015-11-01T19:44:11","modified_gmt":"2015-11-01T08:44:11","slug":"top-seeds-progress-in-qualifying-while-locals-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2015\/11\/01\/top-seeds-progress-in-qualifying-while-locals-fall","title":{"rendered":"Top seeds progress in qualifying while locals fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The majority of the top seeds made it through in qualifying on day 2 of the Canberra International, while local Canberra players all fell in the first round of Women\u2019s qualifying.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s qualifying 3 of the top 4 seeds made it through to the main draw.\u00a0 German top seed Sebastian Fanselow defeated Australia\u2019s Daniel Hobart 6-4, 6-2.\u00a0 Hobart will still get a shot at the main draw after receiving a lucky loser position after the withdrawal of Stefano Napolitano.\u00a0 Second Seed, Blake Mott came through a 3 set battle with Calum Puttergill, while fourth seed Oliver Anderson beat Scott Puodziunas in straight sets.\u00a0 Unseeded Jake Delaney beat Max Purcell 7-6, 6-3 to secure the final main draw position.<\/p>\n<p>Local players, Ashley Keir, Imogen Clews, Kaitlin Staines, and Sarina Kang all lost their first round qualifying matches in straight sets.\u00a0 Keir was drawn a tough opponent from the USA in Veronica Corning, going down 6-3, 6-4.\u00a0 Corning then, went on to defeat number 6 seed Angelique Svinos in the next round.\u00a0 Imogen Clews lost to Victoria\u2019s Jessica Zaviacic 6-2, 6-3, while Sarina Kang lost to Aleksa Cveticanin by the same score line.\u00a0 15 year old Kaitlin Staines, playing in her first pro tour event, battled hard but went down to Anne-Marie Medcalf, 6-3, 6-3.<\/p>\n<p>The top seeds in the women\u2019s draw, made it through to the final round of qualifying with American top seed, Jennifer Ellie dropping only 3 games.\u00a0 2 and 3 seeds Naiktha Bains and Nives Baric both won through it tough 3 set matches, while Destanee Aiava had a comfortable victory.<\/p>\n<p>Locals Jake Eames and James Frawley will both feature in doubles matches tomorrow, with Frawley and partner Harry Bourchier taking on Marinko Matosevic and Robin Stanek.\u00a0 Eames will play with Christopher O\u2019Connell against Oliver Anderson and Calum Puttergill.<\/p>\n<p>It was a great day for Alison Bai and James Frawley, who won the Win a Wildcard competition which was held at the Canberra Tennis Centre today.\u00a0 Bai and Frawley will now head to Melbourne to compete against 7 other pairs for the chance to win a wildcard into the 2016 Australian Open Mixed Doubles.<\/p>\n<p>Entry to the Canberra Tennis Centre is free with play starting at 10am on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>For all the draws and order of play for Monday please <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tournaments\/pro-tournaments\/australian-pro-tour\/canberra\">click here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The majority of the top seeds made it through in qualifying on day 2 of the Canberra International, while local Canberra players all fell in the first round of Women\u2019s qualifying.
