Rising ACT star Nick Kyrgios has been named a finalist in this year’s Newcombe Medal along with Samantha Stosur, Lleyton Hewitt, and Casey Dellacqua.\u00a0 The highest honour in Australian tennis will be presented to the most outstanding player of the season at a special awards ceremony to be held in Melbourne on Monday 24 November.<\/p>\n

Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley<\/strong> said the event would celebrate all levels of achievement within the tennis community.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs well as recognising Australia\u2019s most outstanding tennis player, the awards celebrate the exceptional accomplishments and contributions of tennis communities, coaches, clubs and schools around the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The 2014 finalists were today honoured to learn of their nomination for the sport\u2019s top gong.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really excited to be nominated for the Newcombe Medal, it\u2019s been a huge year for me and this really caps it off.” said Kyrgios.\u00a0 \u201cThe previous winners, Sam and Lleyton, are stars of Australian tennis and it\u2019s amazing to be in their company. I\u2019m really proud of what I\u2019ve been able to achieve this year and I\u2019m already looking forward to 2015 and hopefully another big season ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s fantastic to be nominated for the Newcombe Medal again,\u201d said Stosur.\u00a0 \u201cThe Newcombe Medal is a great night to not only recognise the players\u2019 results, but for the whole tennis family to come together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Said Hewitt: \u201cIt\u2019s always a huge honour to be nominated for this award and to be recognised for the effort you put in all season. I was really proud to win the Newcombe Medal last year and it was a great moment to have Newk present the medal.<\/p>\n

\u201cNewk is someone I\u2018ve always looked up to, we shared a lot of great experiences when he was Davis Cup captain, including our win in 1999, and I\u2019ve been fortunate to learn a lot from him and to consider him a friend and mentor throughout my career.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a great honour to be nominated as one of the finalists for the Newcombe Medal,\u201d Dellacqua said.\u00a0 It\u2019s always a great night with all the current and past Australian players together in one room, and I\u2019m looking forward to getting to Melbourne next month. Since the award was introduced in 2010 it has been highly regarded by the Australian players, particularly since Newk was such an icon of the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ACT has finalists in 2 other categories.\u00a0 Ros Balodis has been nominated for the Most Outstanding 35+ Tennis Senior which\u00a0recognises involvement in 35+ seniors tennis as a player or administrator or both. The recipient of this award has been involved in raising the public profile of 35+ seniors tennis through demonstrated excellence in playing performance, or administration and demonstrated behaviours that exhibit a high level of integrity.\u00a0 Ros was also nominated and won the award in 2013.<\/p>\n

Sue Cowie has also been named\u00a0as a finalist for the Volunteer Achievement Award. This award honours the volunteers within tennis, those people who foster relationships within and between their club and the community and for the contribution they make to the sport, specifically in the area of delivering more active players.<\/p>\n
