{"id":5606,"date":"2013-11-17T18:49:14","date_gmt":"2013-11-17T08:49:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=5606"},"modified":"2013-11-17T18:49:14","modified_gmt":"2013-11-17T08:49:14","slug":"velocity-celebrates-with-convincing-victories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2013\/11\/17\/velocity-celebrates-with-convincing-victories","title":{"rendered":"Velocity celebrates with convincing victories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\">Canberra Velocity completed its Centenary celebrations in emphatic style today\u00a0by not dropping a rubber at North Woden Tennis Club.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Velocity\u2019s men beat the Macquarie Uni Warriors 6-0, while the women were convincing against Sydney Uni Lions, also winning 6-0.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Again Nick Kyrgios showed the crowd why he is the youngest player to be ranked inside the world\u2019s top 200 with a dominant performance against 23-year-old Dean Barclay, winning 4-0, 4-1, while AIS scholarship holder Alex Bolt beat Sean Wheatley 4-2, 4-1.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Canberra\u2019s Jake Eames came from behind in both sets to beat Marious Zelba 4-3 (5-3), 4-3 (5-4), and Robert Howe beat Blake Fong in three tiebreak sets 4-3 (5-1), 3-4 (1-5), 4-3 (5-1).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Kyrgios then teamed with 14-year-old Dimitri Morogiannis, from Torrens, to defeat Wheatley\/Zelba in a thrilling super tiebreak \u00a04-2, 1-4 (11-9), while Alun Jones and Jake Okines beat Barclay\/Fong 2-4, 4-2 (10-7).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Velocity\u2019s men will now play the only other undefeated team in the NSW\/ACT Conference, Sydney Olympic Rebels, led by touring professionals Matthew Barton and Adam Feeney, in the final round.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The women kept their finals\u2019 hopes alive today with a convincing victory over Sydney Uni Lions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Top-ranked Alison Bai had little trouble in her baseline duel against Cassandra Chan, winning 4-2, 4-1, Nicole Hoynaski dropped only two games against Rebecca Jones, and Tyra Calderwood beat Bianca Chidrawi 4-1, 4-0.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">In the last singles match, Velocity No.2 Ashley Keir was pushed to three sets by Martina Hudaly, before winning 4-2, 1-4, 4-3 (5-2).<\/p>\n<p>Velocity\u2019s women then made it a clean sweep in the doubles with Bai and Keir beating Chan and Chidrawi 4-0, 4-1, and Calderwood and Hoynaski defeating Hudaly and Jones 4-3(5-3), 4-1.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The women must beat the Abbie Myers-led NSTA Angels in round five on Friday for a place in the conference final.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canberra Velocity completed its Centenary celebrations in emphatic style today\u00a0by not dropping a rubber at North Woden Tennis Club.
