{"id":5438,"date":"2013-08-23T09:53:31","date_gmt":"2013-08-22T23:53:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=5438"},"modified":"2013-08-23T09:53:31","modified_gmt":"2013-08-22T23:53:31","slug":"nick-kyrgios-to-headline-canberra-velocity-2013-14-mens-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2013\/08\/23\/nick-kyrgios-to-headline-canberra-velocity-2013-14-mens-team","title":{"rendered":"Nick Kyrgios to headline Canberra Velocity 2013-14 men\u2019s team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canberra\u2019s emerging talent will be the focus for Canberra Velocity in this year\u2019s Asia Pacific Tennis League (ATL).<br \/>\nNational coach and Canberra Velocity manager Todd Larkham said he would be using the competition as part of Tennis ACT\u2019s athlete development program.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are going blood our talented ACT junior players,\u201d Larkham said. \u201cThis will be an invaluable experience for Dimi [Morogiannis] and Imogen [Clews], playing against former and current professional players, matches they couldn\u2019t get in an ordinary tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Larkham said it is great for these young players to train and play alongside experienced professionals.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s not everyday they get to practise with players of this level and I have no doubt they will raise their level as a result.\u201d<br \/>\nAustralian Open junior champion Nick Kyrgios will headline Velocity\u2019s men\u2019s team for the event in November.<br \/>\nKyrgios, now ranked an impressive 215 in the world, shocked Czech player Radek Stepanek in the first round at this years\u2019 French Open.<br \/>\nThe Australian Open Boys Junior title holder will play alongside AIS scholarship holder Alex Bolt, Robert Howe and Jake Eames.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be great to have Nick back home competing again for Canberra Velocity,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s had a great year and will be a huge boost for the team.\u201d<br \/>\nAlison Bai and Ashley Keir will again spearhead the Velocity women\u2019s team alongside Tyra Calderwood, Nicole Hoynaski, and Clews.<br \/>\n\u201cAlison has had an excellent year, slashing her ranking from 900 to 440, she\u2019s in really good form,\u201d Larkham said.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s a solid team which definitely has a chance to win the league.\u201d<br \/>\nHe said he hoped Annabel Parolo\u2019s (nee Ellwood)\u00a0 return to the doubles court will give the team the edge it lacked last year, when it finished sixth.<br \/>\n\u201cLast year our doubles wasn\u2019t strong enough, we hope Annabel will help us there\u00a0 and I look forward to seeing her on a court again.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canberra\u2019s emerging talent will be the focus for Canberra Velocity in this year\u2019s Asia Pacific Tennis League (ATL).
