On Wednesday 27 March,\u00a0 Andrew Leigh, Member of Parliament for Fraser visited the Australian Government\u2019s Active After-school Communities (AASC) program at Kingsford Smith School to present the ACT 2012 5-star Community Coach award to Kelly Smith from Tennis ACT.<\/p>\n

More than 70 children took part in a MLC Tennis Hot Shots session, in a fun, safe and inclusive environment with trained community coaches.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe MLC Tennis Hot Shots event provided children with the opportunity to participate in tennis activities with the aim of encouraging them to develop a lifelong love of sport through club, community or school teams,\u201d AASC Regional Coordinator Liz Chester said.<\/p>\n

This initiative demonstrated the important links between Kingsford Smith School, YWCA Hawker School Age Care and Tennis ACT by providing quality sporting experiences for children.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is great to watch children participate in the AASC program under the \u2018Playing for Life\u2019 approach. This is based on the game sense approach to coaching that uses games, rather than drills, to introduce the principles of a particular sport or other structured physical activity in a fun, safe and inclusive environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlaying sport is also about encouraging children to have fun, make new friends, learn new skills and most importantly get active and develop a lifelong love of sport,\u201d Chester said.
\nKingsford Smith Coordinator, Ian Bottomley said, \u201cThe AASC program is free for all our participating students and encourages them to participate in sports and other structured physical activities during the after school time slot.
