If you were in the crowd at the Asia-Pacific Tennis League at the National Sports Club at Lyneham yesterday you could have \u2013 held the Australian Open trophies aloft, that is.<\/p>\n<p>The trophies, officially known as the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup and the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup, were compulsive viewing for the 200-strong crowd at Canberra Velocity\u2019s first tie of the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The opportunity was too good to resist to get your hands on the silverware that the eventual 2013 women\u2019s and men\u2019s champions will actually take home.<\/p>\n<p>The tie against the National Academy NSW AUStars yesterday had a carnival atmosphere &#8211; complete with a DJ, jumping castle and face painter.<\/p>\n<p>The ACT Brumbies assistant coach Stephen Larkham, flyhalf Zack Holmes and prop Scott Sio checked out the silverware, too,\u00a0 before swapping a rugby ball for a tennis racquet and trying their luck on the court.<\/p>\n<p>They took on each other and the crowd, and everyone was a winner.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s action at Lyneham returns to the court with local juniors vying for the ACT Resident Championships from 8am, along with the MLC Tennis HotShots and a cardio tennis demonstration from noon.<\/p>\n<p>Our Canberra Velocity team will then take to the court against the Hunter Raworth Tigers (men) and NSTA Avengers (women) from 2pm.<\/p>\n<p>Entry is free.
