{"id":18159,"date":"2022-12-31T14:10:50","date_gmt":"2022-12-31T03:10:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=18159"},"modified":"2022-12-31T14:10:50","modified_gmt":"2022-12-31T03:10:50","slug":"wildcards-announced-ahead-of-p2-advisory-canberra-international","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2022\/12\/31\/wildcards-announced-ahead-of-p2-advisory-canberra-international","title":{"rendered":"Wildcards announced ahead of P2 Advisory Canberra International"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-18160 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/files\/2022\/12\/DSC_0694-e1672456205858-700x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/files\/2022\/12\/DSC_0694-e1672456205858-700x450.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/files\/2022\/12\/DSC_0694-e1672456205858-200x128.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rising women\u2019s stars <strong>Olivia Gadecki<\/strong> and <strong>Talia Gibson <\/strong>have been awarded Wildcards into the <strong>P<sup>2<\/sup> Advisory Canberra International 2023<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Both players will use the tournament as a vital lead up before making their debuts at the <strong>Australian Open<\/strong>, after also being awarded a wildcard into the Grand Slam last week.<\/p>\n<p>Gadecki \u00a0has had a stellar year after reaching three consecutive finals on the Australian Pro Tour and in June winning two rounds of qualifying to reach the main-draw at the WTA event in \u2018s-Hertogenbosch.<\/p>\n<p>18-year-old Gibson, who was named Junior Female Athlete of the Year at the recent <strong>Newcombe Medal Australian Tennis Awards<\/strong>, began 2022 well outside the top 1,000 but has soared to a high mark of world No.342.<\/p>\n<p>Aussie player <strong>Astra Sharma<\/strong> also joins the women\u2019s main-draw, with a current ranking of No.118.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s field Aussies Marc Polmans and Dane Sweeny secure main-draw wildcards. \u00a0Polmans and Sweeny are no strangers to Canberra. \u00a0Polmans has competed in multiple Canberra International tournaments, while Sweeny claimed back-to-back titles in recent UTR events at the Canberra Tennis Centre. \u00a0Rising Aussie <strong>James McCabe<\/strong> rounds out the trio of \u00a0Men\u2019s main-draw wildcards.<\/p>\n<p>One of\u00a0<em>Canberra&#8217;s<\/em>\u00a0most promising rising stars\u00a0<strong>Charlie Camus<\/strong><em> has been <\/em>awarded a wildcard into the Qualifying which kicks off new years day \u2013 Sunday 1 January. Camus has had an impressive year, kicking off his European campaign by playing qualifying at the French Open Juniors, following up with a swing of European tournaments. Charlie\u2019s world junior ranking peaked at 70 in December 2022, and he currently sits in the top 10 globally for his age as well as possessing 6 ATP points.<\/p>\n<p>Young-gun <strong>Hayden Jones<\/strong> also secured a wildcard into Qualifying. \u00a0Both Camus and Jones were selected by <strong>Lleyton Hewitt<\/strong> to be \u2018orange boys\u2019 and practice partners for the Australian Davis Cup team. Both players also represented Australia in the Junior Davis Cup 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow Aussies <strong>Tristan Schoolkate<\/strong> and <strong>Adam Walton<\/strong> round out the Qualifying Wildcards.<\/p>\n<p>The P<sup>2<\/sup> Advisory Canberra International will see the women and men compete for a total prize pool of USD $190,000. The men will take to the court in the ATP Challenger 100 event, the highest Challenger event in the country.
