Former World No.19 Hyeon Chung (KOR) and Next Gen rising star Jannik Sinner (ITA) will headline men\u2019s day two action at the Apis Canberra International (Bendigo) on Tuesday.\u00a0 Women\u2019s main draw matches are also set to commence with Canberra\u2019s Alison Bai in action.<\/p>\n
Chung won the hearts of Australian\u2019s in 2018 with his magical run to the Australian Open semifinals defeating Novak Djokovic (SRB) and Alexander Zverev (GER) on the way.\u00a0 The 23-year-old missed much of 2019 due to back and leg injuries but will be looking for a strong start to the year when he takes on Australian wildcard, Akira Santillan (Qld).\u00a0 The winner of the match will earn a shot at second seed, Andreas Seppi (ITA).<\/p>\n
Sinner had an outstanding 2019 which saw him climb from World No.553 to No.78 by the year\u2019s end.\u00a0 At just 18-years-old he claimed the Next Gen Finals in Milan, defeating Australia\u2019s Alex De Minaur in the final.\u00a0 Sinner is the third seed and will play Emil Ruusuvuori (FIN) who won in three sets over Ramkumar Ramanathan (IND) in the opening round.<\/p>\n
Fifth seed and world No.84 Steve Johnson will take on Zhizhen Zhang (CHN) while fellow seeds Brayden Schnur (CAN), Nobert Gombos (SVK), and Taro Daniel (JPN) will be in action.<\/p>\n
Canberra\u2019s Alison Bai will get her campaign underway, when she faces Magdalena Frech (POL) in the opening round, while fourth seed \u00a0Antonia Lottner (GER) will take on Kamilla Rakhimova (RUS).<\/p>\n
The final round of qualifying will also take place, with Katie Boulter (GBR), Irina Falconi (USA) and Urszula Radwanska (POL) all in action.\u00a0 All are former top 100 players with Falconi and Radwanska to clash on Tuesday to earn a spot in the main draw.<\/p>\n
The opening day of play was a mixed day for the Australian\u2019s with Alex Bolt (SA), Aleksander Vukic (NSW) and Andrew Harris (Vic) scoring first round wins, while Harry Bourchier (Tas) won his qualifying match and will play fellow Aussie Marc Polmans (Vic) in round one on Tuesday.\u00a0 Wildcards, Jason Kubler (Qld), Max Purcell (NSW) and Matthew Ebden (WA) all fell in the opening round.<\/p>\n
