The annual Ladies Charity Day held on Thursday 2 May has raised an impressive $2200 for Parkinson\u2019s ACT.\u00a0 Hosted by Belconnen and Melba Tennis Clubs, participants hit the courts for some tennis, before enjoying a barbecue lunch.<\/p>\n
Parkinson\u2019s ACT is a non-profit self-help organisation run by volunteers who are themselves people living with Parkinson\u2019s and their carers.\u00a0 They provide information, support and education for people living with Parkinson\u2019s and their families in the ACT and surrounding areas.<\/p>\n
Parkinson\u2019s ACT committee member, Judith Ducker, said the significant donation would be put to good use.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe enormous amount raised is sufficient to cover the costs of mailing our monthly bulletin for twelve months,\u00a0 or it would fund a scholarship for a nurse in an aged care facility to study a specific six-month Parkinson\u2019s education course.\u00a0\u00a0 It could also cover the costs of hiring a venue for Singing for Parkinson\u2019s for twelve months\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe support also provides significant psychological support for the volunteers who run PACT.\u00a0 It is a heart-warming gesture that makes us realise that the work we do is valued and boosts our morale,\u201d Ducker added.<\/p>\n
In an added bonus to Parkinson\u2019s ACT, the day also facilitated a connection between the organisation and Belconnen Tennis Club coach, Jeff Gray, with discussions underway to start up a new program.<\/p>\n
