{"id":14942,"date":"2019-04-08T15:17:21","date_gmt":"2019-04-08T05:17:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=14942"},"modified":"2019-04-15T15:18:57","modified_gmt":"2019-04-15T05:18:57","slug":"professionals-inspire-junior-girls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2019\/04\/08\/professionals-inspire-junior-girls","title":{"rendered":"Professionals inspire junior girls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Tennis World Canberra Bronze JT, Girls only event was held in conjunction with finals weekend of the ACT Claycourt International #1 from 22-24 March.<\/p>\n<p>The opportunity to watch some of the world\u2019s best players while competing in their own event provided plenty of motivation for the junior athletes.<\/p>\n<p>Canberra\u2019s Alisha Kumar had a great weekend, winning both the 12\/u singles and enjoyed watching the professionals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was pretty cool, because while I was playing, in between breaks I could see the players play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kumar provided a spirited comeback in the final after being down a set and 5-1, she recovered to win the match 6-7(5) 7-5(2) 11-9.\u00a0 She also combined with Jessica Das to defeat Chloe Barton and Lily Carmody in the doubles.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the victories, Kumar was looking forward to improving her game to hopefully one day play in similar events to the ACT Claycourt International.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I played very well on the weekend even though I have a few things to improve on in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other results over the weekend, Sophie McDonald and Ellie Koundouris both made the singles semifinals.\u00a0 McDonald also combined with Jane Haeusler to take on the 16\/u girls doubles title.<\/p>\n<p>A boys only JT was also held a few weeks earlier with Nicholas Maleganeas the standout performer from the ACT.\u00a0 Maleganeas only dropped 3 games on his way to the singles title and also combined with Leo Phijidvijan to make the doubles final.<\/p>\n<p><em>Pictured &#8211; Sophie McDonald<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Tennis World Canberra Bronze JT, Girls only event was held in conjunction with finals weekend of the ACT Claycourt International #1 from 22-24 March.
