{"id":14365,"date":"2018-11-20T15:17:51","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T04:17:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=14365"},"modified":"2018-11-20T15:17:51","modified_gmt":"2018-11-20T04:17:51","slug":"telopea-park-wins-todd-woodbridge-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2018\/11\/20\/telopea-park-wins-todd-woodbridge-cup","title":{"rendered":"Telopea Park wins Todd Woodbridge Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Telopea Park School <\/strong>has become the first ACT school to win the <strong>Todd Woodbridge Cup <\/strong>after claiming the title at <strong>Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre<\/strong> on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Established in 2016, the competition for Year 3 and 4 students uses modified courts and low compression red balls.\u00a0 The competition encourages participation, providing a positive experience playing tennis, growing friendships and giving students the opportunity to represent their school in a team environment.<\/p>\n<p>After winning the <strong>ACT State Final<\/strong> in September, Telopea Park progressed to the finals to compete against 19 schools from all across NSW who had won their regional events.\u00a0 After going through five pool rounds undefeated they progressed through to the final where they defeated <strong>St Patrick\u2019s School, Albury<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Telopea Park School PE Coordinator, <strong>Cathy Marot<\/strong> was pleasantly surprised to come away with the victory, with the kids enjoying the social aspect of the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t go there to win, we went there to participate, be part of it, for the kids to try their best and enjoy the unique experience to play at Sydney Olympic Park and to have fun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was really nice to see them playing with other schools, it was nice to see them mixing, and they saw some other kids they knew from playing tennis tournaments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team has been training for the event for the past five months, working with their local coach, <strong>Robbie Manzano<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we heard about the event, we worked with Robbie, who is associated with the school for tennis.\u00a0 He has several programs, including a walk to tennis program from our school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Friday lunchtimes, they would all get together and play.\u00a0 It was a way to learn how to play together and communicate, compromise, and be nice to each other.\u00a0 We talked about anybody who can be better, it\u2019s good for the team, and you could feel the team spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tennis Australia School Competition Coordinator, <strong>Ben Dew, <\/strong>was pleased with the success of the day and hopes it will encourage participants on their tennis journey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe aim is to give them a great experience in a team tennis environment that they can take back to their school and also transition into their local club and continue with their tennis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The competition has seen rapid growth over the past three years with the 2018 Todd Woodbridge Cup consisting of 50 events played by 262 schools with 5041 kids participating across NSW and the ACT.<\/p>\n<p>Dew said the modified equipment along with a positive team environment were key to the competitions success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a modified tennis competition that we haven\u2019t had before, it\u2019s something that is quite new and being able to run these events not only a tennis clubs, but at primary schools around the state that don\u2019t have tennis courts, has been a key factor in getting more Todd Woodbridge Cup events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really pleasing to see kids having a positive first experience of tennis competition.\u00a0 It\u2019s a team environment and it\u2019s modified, and more of a focus on having fun and being inclusive,\u201d Dew added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Telopea Park School has become the first ACT school to win the Todd Woodbridge Cup after claiming the title at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre on Monday.
