{"id":14083,"date":"2018-10-03T15:38:41","date_gmt":"2018-10-03T05:38:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=14083"},"modified":"2018-10-03T15:39:21","modified_gmt":"2018-10-03T05:39:21","slug":"14083","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2018\/10\/03\/14083","title":{"rendered":"Camus wins Canberra claycourt nationals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canberra\u2019s Charlie Camus has won the biggest title of his young career taking out the 12\/u boys singles final at the Australian Claycourt Championships today at the Canberra Tennis Centre.<\/p>\n<p>The second seeded proved too strong for doubles partner Pavle Marinkov (NSW) claiming a hard fought 6-3 3-6 6-2 victory to claim his maiden national title.<\/p>\n<p>It capped off an outstanding week for Camus, with the 11-year-old winning the doubles title yesterday with Marinkov.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels pretty good to win my first ever national title especially here in my hometown Canberra,\u201d Camus said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I played really disciplined and kept my cool and didn\u2019t lose my head throughout the week which helped with my results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy goals as a junior tennis player is to one day win a Grand Slam and represent Australia in a Davis Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Camus will now play in the Tennis World Canberra Junior Open, before heading to Sydney next week for the Sydney Age.<\/p>\n<p>In other ACT results, Marqaylar Tere equal 15th position, Charlie Snow finished in 28<sup>th<\/sup>, and Stellan Lindrud finished in 31<sup>st<\/sup> position.<\/p>\n<p>In an event first, players, officials and parents also took part in the <strong>#HandshakeChallenge<\/strong>, a new initiative launched by former South African Davis Cup player and coach, <strong>John-Laffnie de Jager<\/strong>, the challenge is designed to increase sportsmanship and fair play on the court by asking participants in any sport to shake hands before and after competition.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to players shaking hands before the start of the match, parents\/guardians and coaches were also invited to step on-court before the start of the match and shake hands and listen to the pre-match instructions from the chair umpire or court supervisor.<\/p>\n<p>Tournament director <strong>Mark Pead<\/strong> believes the initiative was a great element to a highly successful week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was great to be the first national Australian tennis tournament to incorporate the Handshake Challenge into competition.
