{"id":13393,"date":"2018-03-08T14:17:28","date_gmt":"2018-03-08T03:17:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=13393"},"modified":"2018-03-08T15:56:37","modified_gmt":"2018-03-08T04:56:37","slug":"act-claycourt-international-1-elevated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2018\/03\/08\/act-claycourt-international-1-elevated","title":{"rendered":"ACT Claycourt hits next level"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>2018 ACT Claycourt International #1<\/strong> has been elevated to a USD$60,000 Women\u2019s ITF Pro Tour event with women\u2019s tennis set to shine over a two week period in the capital.<\/p>\n<p>The ACT Claycourt International #1 and #2 will take place at the Canberra Tennis Centre from 17 March \u2013 1 April 2018. \u00a0The increase in prizemoney and ranking points is sure to increase the quality and depth of the field with the ACT Claycourt International #2 offering a further USD$25,000.<\/p>\n<p>This will be the third year the events have been held on clay, with last year\u2019s event being named as a finalist for Most Outstanding Professional Tournament at the <strong>Newcombe Medal<\/strong>, <strong>Australian Tennis Awards.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tennis Australia Pro Tour Manager <strong>Fiona Luscombe <\/strong>says \u201cThere was an opportunity within the Australian calendar to elevate a clay court tournament prior to Australian players heading overseas for the European summer where many events are conducted on this surface.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe facilities at the Canberra Tennis Centre as well as Tennis ACT\u2019s proven track record at running international events, made them an obvious choice to host the event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ACT Claycourt International Tournament Director Lenka Greenhalgh is excited about the upcoming tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are looking forward to welcoming a quality international field to Canberra and showcasing women\u2019s tennis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ACT Claycourt International has provided some great moments over the past couple of years.\u00a0 In 2016, <strong>Destanee Aiava <\/strong>came through qualifying to make her first Pro Tour final at only 15 years-old, while <strong>Ashleigh Barty<\/strong> played here in one of her first tournaments after returning to tennis, winning back to back doubles titles with <strong>Arina Rodionova<\/strong>,\u201d Greenhalgh added.<\/p>\n<p>Following on from the success of last month\u2019s Fed Cup tie in Canberra, the Pro Tour events will provide further opportunities to inspire and show case women\u2019s sport in the capital through a range of off court activities over the two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday 23 March in conjunction with <strong>Canberra Women in Business<\/strong>, Tennis ACT will host a Sport and Leadership Networking Brunch with the opportunity to network and mingle with up and coming women\u2019s tennis players. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trybooking.com\/book\/event?eid=359647&amp;\">Click here<\/a> for more.<\/p>\n<p>Tennis ACT has partnered with the Australian Government\u2019s <strong>Girls Make Your Move<\/strong> campaign for a girls\u2019 day on Sunday 25 March from 9am-11am, a free community event aiming to inspire, energise and empower young women to be more active.<\/p>\n<p>A number of ACT based sports will have a presence including <strong>Basketball <\/strong>, <strong>Cricket <\/strong>, <strong>Hockey <\/strong>, <strong>Netball <\/strong>, <strong>Tennis <\/strong>, and <strong>Volleyball <\/strong>.\u00a0 <strong>Next Gen Canberra<\/strong> will offer Yoga, Blitz boot camp and box fit sessions.
