{"id":12983,"date":"2018-01-09T20:58:45","date_gmt":"2018-01-09T09:58:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=12983"},"modified":"2018-01-09T20:58:45","modified_gmt":"2018-01-09T09:58:45","slug":"canberra-compares-to-atp-250-seppi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2018\/01\/09\/canberra-compares-to-atp-250-seppi","title":{"rendered":"Canberra compares to ATP 250: Seppi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former top 20 Italian force <strong>Andreas Seppi <\/strong>commenced his 2018 campaign in Canberra this week and compared <strong>East Hotel Canberra Challenger <\/strong>to an ATP World Tour 250 event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not much weaker than a 250,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere may not be top 20 or top 30 guys, but in the end, all matches are very difficult. It\u2019s like playing a 250 until the semis, it\u2019s a very strong field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seppi edged out Germany\u2019s <strong>Maximilan Marterer <\/strong>in a thrilling opening round match on Monday in Lyneham, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a very difficult first round, he\u2019s a good player and a leftie, so [he] served very well,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was a close match and I was very happy to get through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After starting 2017 with a fourth round appearance at Australian Open, a series of early round tournament losses saw Seppi\u2019s ranking fall outside the top 100.<\/p>\n<p>The three time ATP Tour champion is hoping to play as many matches as possible this year to increase his ranking back to former glory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my first time here and hopefully I can play as many matches as possible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not easy going back and playing Challengers and competing against all these good guys,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a short preseason and I wanted to play a few more matches, as many as I can. I\u2019m feeling well, that\u2019s the most important thing.<\/p>\n<p>Seppi reached a career high of 18 in 2013.
