{"id":12950,"date":"2018-01-07T15:46:43","date_gmt":"2018-01-07T04:46:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=12950"},"modified":"2018-01-07T20:42:50","modified_gmt":"2018-01-07T09:42:50","slug":"top-100-opening-round-battles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2018\/01\/07\/top-100-opening-round-battles","title":{"rendered":"Top 100 opening round battles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Main draw will commence on Monday at the <strong>East Hotel Canberra Challenger\u00a0<\/strong>with two top 100 battles to feature in the opening round when\u00a0<strong>Andreas Seppi <\/strong>(ITA) faces\u00a0<strong>Maximilan Marterer <\/strong>(GER); whilst <strong>Marton Fucsovics <\/strong>(HUN) will take on Tunisia\u2019s <strong>Malek Jaizri.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It will be the first meeting between eighth seed Seppi and world No.90 Marterer, with only four spots separating the pair in the ATP rankings.\u00a0 Seppi has been to the fourth round at Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon, while Marterer broke through to the top 100 in 2017, winning three ATP Challenger titles and going through qualifying to make his Grand Slam debut at the US Open. \u00a0Seppi and Marterer will play on centre court, not before 4.00pm.<\/p>\n<p>Sixth seed Fucsovics won two ATP Challenger titles in 2017, broke into the world\u2019s top 100 for the first time, and made the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 event in Basel, Switzerland as a qualifier.\u00a0 It will be his first meeting with Jaziri who has been ranked as high as 47 in the world and is the winner of seven ATP Challenger titles.<\/p>\n<p>The match between world No.104 <strong>Nicolas Jarry <\/strong>(CHI) and 18-year-old <strong>Corentin Moutet <\/strong>(FRA)\u00a0will also feature on Monday&#8217;s schedule along with second seed\u00a0<strong>Florian Mayer\u00a0<\/strong>(GER) against\u00a0<strong>Yosuke Watanuki\u00a0<\/strong>(JPN). \u00a0Australia\u00a0<strong>Luke\u00a0Saville\u00a0<\/strong>(SA) faces a tough task in fifth seed\u00a0<strong>Victor Estrella Burgos <\/strong>(DOM).<\/p>\n<p>Defending champion\u00a0<strong>Dudi Sela\u00a0<\/strong>(ISR) will open his campaign on Tuesday against\u00a0<strong>Hugo Grenier <\/strong>(FRA).<\/p>\n<p>Tournament Director <strong>Kim Kachel <\/strong>said \u201cThere are some stellar opening round matches in the draw which could be finals at other ATP Challenger events, such is the strength of our field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFourteen players in the draw will go on to compete at next week\u2019s <strong>Australian Open<\/strong> and there will be unbelievable tennis on display in Lyneham throughout the next week,\u201d Kachel added.<\/p>\n<p>The final round of men&#8217;s qualifying will also be played on Monday with Canberra based\u00a0<strong>Harry Bourchier\u00a0<\/strong>(Tas) to take on\u00a0<strong>Steven De Waard\u00a0<\/strong>(Qld) who defeated Canberra&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>James Frawley\u00a0<\/strong>on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Play will commence at 10am with free entry to the Canberra Tennis Centre.<\/p>\n<p><em><b>About the East Hotel Canberra Challenger<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The East Hotel Canberra Challenger 2018 is on at the Canberra Tennis Centre until 13 January 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Entry from 6 &#8211; 12 January is free with entry on finals day by gold coin donation.<\/p>\n<p>The final round of men&#8217;s qualifying will take place on Monday January 8 along with the opening round of main draw.<\/p>\n<p>Draws and the Order of Play can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tournaments\/pro-tournaments\/australian-pro-tour\/canberra-2\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Live scoring and streaming for the East Hotel Canberra Challenger is available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atpworldtour.com\/en\/atp-challenger-tour\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Main draw will commence on Monday at the East Hotel Canberra Challenger\u00a0with two top 100 battles to feature in the opening round when\u00a0Andreas Seppi (ITA) faces\u00a0Maximilan Marterer (GER); whilst Marton Fucsovics (HUN) will take on Tunisia\u2019s Malek Jaizri.
