{"id":12455,"date":"2017-10-30T20:32:37","date_gmt":"2017-10-30T09:32:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=12455"},"modified":"2017-10-30T22:13:22","modified_gmt":"2017-10-30T11:13:22","slug":"staines-prevails-in-three","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2017\/10\/30\/staines-prevails-in-three","title":{"rendered":"Staines prevails in three"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>National Academy athlete <strong>Kaitlin Staines<\/strong>\u2019 winning return to the court has continued with a hard-fought three-set match at the <strong>Apis Canberra International<\/strong> today.<\/p>\n<p>Staines, who took the past four months off tennis to concentrate on her HSC, beat <strong>Genevieve Lorbergs <\/strong>(SA)\u00a0\u00a07-6(2) 3-6 6-2 in just over two hours.<\/p>\n<p>The 17-year-old said she was happy with where her big-hitting game is right now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s definitely better than I was expecting,\u201d she said. \u201cI probably had pretty low expectations going out there but that is probably what\u2019s helped, being more relaxed out there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was definitely hard with the wind and even the sun at one end today, so it was pretty scrappy tennis but I was happy to push through on those more important points.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She will now face rising 19-year-old <strong>Ramu Ueda\u00a0<\/strong>(JPN), for a place in the main draw. \u00a0Ueda was a 6-0 6-3 winner over local National Academy player <strong>Lisa Mays<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never played her but I watched her a little bit today, she\u2019s a great player,\u201d Staines said. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a massive grind and it\u2019s going to be really hard to get through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later, Staines and Mays lost to top seeds <strong>Sara Tomic<\/strong> (QLD) and <strong>Alana Parnaby<\/strong>\u00a0(VIC) 5-7 6-4 (8-10) in a thrilling doubles qualifying match lasting 1hr 37min. \u00a0The pair were leading 8-5 in the super-tiebreak before losing the next five points.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just that one point that sort of changed the game, but I think we did really well against a pair like that to get really close,\u201d Staines said.<\/p>\n<p>In main draw men&#8217;s action, 2015 Canberra International finalist\u00a0<strong>Luke Saville\u00a0<\/strong>(SA) upset fourth seed\u00a0<strong>Mitchell Krueger\u00a0<\/strong>(USA), while\u00a0<strong>Sebastian\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Fanselow\u00a0<\/strong>(GER) beat sixth seed\u00a0<strong>Noah Rubin\u00a0<\/strong>(USA). \u00a0Second seed\u00a0<strong>Taro Daniel\u00a0<\/strong>(JPN) and eighth seed\u00a0<strong>Omar Jaskia\u00a0<\/strong>(VIC) also progressed to the second round recording straight set wins.<\/p>\n<p>In the men\u2019s doubles first round, Canberra\u2019s <strong>James Frawley<\/strong> and <strong>Jacob Grills<\/strong> (VIC) lost to <strong>Brydan Klein<\/strong> (GBR) and <strong>Dane Propoggia<\/strong> (NSW) 5-7 4-6.<\/p>\n<p>The final round of women&#8217;s qualifying will be played on Tuesday, with main draw women&#8217;s matches also commencing. \u00a0The first round of men&#8217;s main draw will also continue on Tuesday featuring top seed\u00a0<strong>Jordan Thompson\u00a0<\/strong>(NSW) and\u00a0<strong>Matthew Ebden\u00a0<\/strong>(WA).<\/p>\n<p>The Apis Canberra International 2017 is on at the Canberra Tennis Centre until November 5 2017.
