{"id":12433,"date":"2017-10-29T16:09:49","date_gmt":"2017-10-29T05:09:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=12433"},"modified":"2017-10-29T20:27:19","modified_gmt":"2017-10-29T09:27:19","slug":"straight-sets-wins-for-staines-mays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2017\/10\/29\/straight-sets-wins-for-staines-mays","title":{"rendered":"Straight sets wins for Staines, Mays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Seventeen-year-old National Academy Canberra players, <strong>Kaitlin Staines<\/strong> and <strong>Lisa Mays<\/strong> are into the second qualifying round of the <strong>Apis Canberra International<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Staines struggled early before beating Queensland\u2019s Tiana Windbuchler 7-6 (4) 6-1, while Mays proved too strong\u00a0for <strong>Kelsey Lewis<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(NSW)\u00a06-2 6-3.<\/p>\n<p>Staines, who hasn\u2019t played a competitive singles match since July, said she was just happy to get through to the second qualifying round.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really good to get back into it,\u201d she said. \u201cI was going into the match feeling not as much pressure as I normally would\u2026but I was happy with how I played.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The big-serving right-hander admits she was rusty having taken the past couple of months off tennis to focus on her HSC studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pretty sure I hit the ball on every single bit of the racquet, the wind didn\u2019t help too much,\u201d she said. \u201cAs I got more confident out there, it got a lot better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She will play tenacious South Australian <strong>Genevieve Lorbergs<\/strong> in the second qualifying round.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s a different player, she\u2019s probably not as aggressive as most players. She\u2019ll slice, she\u2019ll do anything to win, but I\u2019m looking forward to it, I have nothing to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Staines, from Wagga Wagga, said she\u2019s enjoying getting back on the court again in Canberra.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot more people to hit with here, the girls are fabulous and, of course, Todd is obviously the best coach ever. They\u2019ve all been so good to me, it\u2019s made a massive difference to my game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After sitting her final exam on Thursday, Staines will complete a training block in Canberra before competing in the <strong>18\/u Australian Championship<\/strong>s in Melbourne and the Australian Open wildcard playoff.<\/p>\n<p>Mays, meanwhile, will meet rising 19-year-old <strong>Ramu Ueda <\/strong>(JPN), a player she has lost to in her past two meetings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe last time [we played] I lost in the second set 7-5, so I\u2019m feeling more confident. I know what I have to do to beat her. I have to make more balls, stay aggressive, play well and stay mentally tough because she likes to grind and get balls back. She doesn\u2019t give anything away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Canberra\u2019s <strong>Annerly Poulos<\/strong> battled hard but went down in three sets to <strong>Anne-Marie Medcalf<\/strong> (NSW) 6-3 2-6 3-6.<\/p>\n<p>Medcalf will now meet top seed <strong>Priscilla Hon <\/strong>(QLD)\u00a0in the second qualifying round on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>In men&#8217;s qualifying action\u00a0<strong>Matthew Barton\u00a0<\/strong>(NSW) eliminated 2015 champion\u00a0<strong>Ben Mitchell\u00a0<\/strong>(QLD) to make it through to the main draw along with\u00a0<strong>Dane Propoggia,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Calum Puttergill\u00a0<\/strong>QLD)\u00a0and<strong> Gavin Van Peperzeel\u00a0<\/strong>(QLD). \u00a0Van Peperzeel won an epic battle with second seed\u00a0<strong>Chris O&#8217;Connell\u00a0<\/strong>6-7 7-6 7-6.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seventeen-year-old National Academy Canberra players, Kaitlin Staines and Lisa Mays are into the second qualifying round of the Apis Canberra International.
