{"id":11885,"date":"2017-08-02T15:06:58","date_gmt":"2017-08-02T05:06:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=11885"},"modified":"2017-08-03T11:06:22","modified_gmt":"2017-08-03T01:06:22","slug":"poulos-set-to-compete-at-world-finals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2017\/08\/02\/poulos-set-to-compete-at-world-finals","title":{"rendered":"Poulos set to compete at World Finals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ACT&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Annerly Poulos\u00a0<\/strong>is set to represent Australia at the\u00a0<strong>ITF World Junior Tennis Finals<\/strong> in\u00a0<strong>Prostejov, Czech Republic\u00a0<\/strong>from Monday 7 to 12 August.<\/p>\n<p>Australia qualified in both the junior girls\u2019 and boys\u2019 divisions after placing first and third respectively in their Asia \/ Oceania qualifying events held earlier this year in Bangkok, Thailand. \u00a0Poulos went undefeated in singles action at the qualifying event.<\/p>\n<p>Poulos will be joined by\u00a0<strong>Lara Walker<\/strong> (Brisbane, Qld) and <strong>Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz <\/strong>(Glengowrie, SA) with Tennis Australia National Women\u2019s Tennis Manager <strong>Rohan Fisher<\/strong> named as the team captain.<\/p>\n<p>Top Canberra junior Poulos is looking forward to pulling on the green and gold for Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really excited to be representing Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter doing so well together at the qualifying event in Thailand I cannot wait to play in the Czech Republic,\u201d Poulos said.<\/p>\n<p>Fisher believes the team is ready and raring to compete at the world finals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The girls did extremely well in Thailand, winning the Asia \/ Oceania World Junior Tennis qualifying event. This has provided them with a strong sense of confidence and belonging coming into the Finals,\u201d Fisher said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe girls have been training hard in preparation for this tournament and have been playing junior events across Europe, building their competition experience on clay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorld Junior Tennis is a fantastic opportunity for the team. Representing your country is an athlete\u2019s ultimate goal, hopefully one day we\u2019ll see them on the Australian Fed Cup team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the boys\u2019 squad, <strong>Casey Hoole<\/strong> (Kedron, Qld), <strong>Philip Sekulic<\/strong> (Wakerley, Qld), <strong>Edward Vo<\/strong> (Croydon Park, SA) and <strong>Cooper White <\/strong>(Alphington, Vic) have been named to represent Australia at the international event. Tennis Australia National Academy Coach \u2013 Queensland <strong>Anthony Richardson<\/strong> will captain the team.<\/p>\n<p>Richardson said the team is looking healthy and strong ahead of next week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have an extremely even team and the boys all get on so well. Team spirit and togetherness is a real strength of the squad this year,\u201d Richardson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019ve got a very good chance, all four players are strong on clay and there is a lot of diversity within the team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both teams departed for Europe last month to train, compete and prepare for the tournament. \u00a0Poulos has been in great form, making the final of the Windmill Cup, a Grade 1 European 14\/u event held in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s top 16 nations from five qualifying zones earned their place in the ITF World Junior Tennis Finals after qualification events were held in <strong>Africa<\/strong>, <strong>North \/ Central America<\/strong>, <strong>South America<\/strong>, <strong>Europe<\/strong> and <strong>Asia \/ Oceania <\/strong>earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>The ITF World Junior Tennis tournament is an international team competition for players aged 14-and-under.<\/p>\n<p>The ITF World Junior Tennis competition has helped launch the careers of former world No.1s including\u00a0<strong>Novak Djokovic<\/strong>\u00a0(SRB),\u00a0<strong>Lleyton Hewitt<\/strong>\u00a0(AUS),\u00a0<strong>Rafael Nadal<\/strong>\u00a0(ESP),\u00a0<strong>Kim Clijsters\u00a0<\/strong>(BEL) and\u00a0<strong>Justine Henin<\/strong>\u00a0(BEL), who all participated in the event as juniors.<\/p>\n<p>For more information please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itftennis.com\/juniors\/team-competitions\/itf-world-junior-tennis.aspx\">http:\/\/www.itftennis.com\/juniors\/team-competitions\/itf-world-junior-tennis.aspx<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ACT&#8217;s\u00a0Annerly Poulos\u00a0is set to represent Australia at the\u00a0ITF World Junior Tennis Finals in\u00a0Prostejov, Czech Republic\u00a0from Monday 7 to 12 August.
