{"id":11658,"date":"2017-07-12T09:20:55","date_gmt":"2017-07-11T23:20:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=11658"},"modified":"2017-08-03T11:24:29","modified_gmt":"2017-08-03T01:24:29","slug":"tennis-world-canberra-junior-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2017\/07\/12\/tennis-world-canberra-junior-open","title":{"rendered":"Tennis World Canberra Junior Open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Tennis World Canberra Junior Open<\/strong> was held over split weekends at the <strong>Canberra Tennis Centre <\/strong>with 88 participants taking part.<\/p>\n<p>ACT players competed well across the 12\/u events, with <strong>Charlie Camus, Gen Casarotto, <\/strong>and <strong>Nicholas Maleganeas <\/strong>making it through to the semifinals.\u00a0 Camus beat Casarotto in the semis, while <strong>Jesse Ingleton <\/strong>(NSW) proved too strong for Maleganeas in a tight three set battle.\u00a0 In one of the standout matches of the tournament, Ingleton defeated Camus 4-2, 1-4, 4-1 in the final.\u00a0 The 12\/u boy\u2019s doubles final featured all ACT players with <strong>Quinn Blakers <\/strong>and <strong>Aaron Liu <\/strong>defeating Maleganeas and <strong>Connor Watts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the 12\/u girls singles, <strong>Aliyah Dwyer <\/strong>made it through to the semis before falling to <strong>Taegan White <\/strong>(SA)<strong>.\u00a0 <\/strong>White went onto win the title, defeating <strong>Marqaylar Tere <\/strong>(NSW) in a third set tiebreak.\u00a0 ACT\u2019s <strong>Sophie McDonald, <\/strong>then combined with White to beat Tere and <strong>Isabella Andrews <\/strong>(NSW) in the 12\/u girls doubles.<\/p>\n<p>Tournament Director <strong>Jarrod Williams <\/strong>was thrilled with the sportsmanship and match quality displayed in the 12\/u event. \u201cMatch consistency and player sportsmanship was a highlight noted by tournament staff. We were all spoilt to witness player technique and tactics developed through the many apparent on-court training hours\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The following weekend ACT players dominated the 14\/u girls, 16\/u girls, and 16\/u boys events.\u00a0 <strong>Alyssa Simoncini <\/strong>won the 14\/u girls singles title, defeating fellow Canberra players <strong>Victoria D\u2019Ambrosio <\/strong>and <strong>Saskia Kozlow <\/strong>in the semifinal and final respectively.\u00a0 Simoncini then combined with her younger sister, <strong>Sofia Simoncini <\/strong>to take out the doubles over Kozlow and <strong>Callison Row.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 16\/u boys featured four ACT players in the semifinals with <strong>Jack Tallarida Lyons <\/strong>defeating <strong>Daniel Zhang <\/strong>and <strong>Jimmy Fu <\/strong>taking out <strong>Oliver Sheehan<\/strong>.\u00a0 In the final Tallarida Lyons won two tiebreaks to take out the title without dropping a set.\u00a0 Fu and Zhang then combined to beat Tallarida Lyons and Sheehan in the doubles.<\/p>\n<p>The 16\/u girls event was a round robin with ACT players claiming the top three spots.\u00a0 <strong>Nornaaah Sharmaa <\/strong>went through undefeated to beat out <strong>Madison Sutherland <\/strong>(runner-up) and <strong>Annika Wise (<\/strong>3<sup>rd<\/sup> place).<\/p>\n<p>The 14\/u boys singles saw Victoria\u2019s <strong>Roberto Besazza <\/strong>defeat <strong>Sean Wang <\/strong>(NSW) 0-4, 4-3, 4-2. \u00a0The 14\/u boys doubles was a closely contested affair with the round robin stages resulting in a three way tie. \u00a0<strong>Charlie Snow <\/strong>(ACT) and\u00a0<strong>Ryan Kitchin\u00a0<\/strong>(NSW) were crowned champions after a countback on sets with\u00a0<strong>Baden Arellano Gerrard<\/strong>\u00a0(ACT)<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and Charlie Camus (ACT) finishing runner-up.<\/p>\n<p>Williams was also pleased with performance of the 14\/u and 16\/u athletes. \u201cSpectators and parents were happy to see such quality tennis coming from all players.
