{"id":11143,"date":"2017-05-09T12:06:32","date_gmt":"2017-05-09T02:06:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=11143"},"modified":"2017-06-13T10:44:52","modified_gmt":"2017-06-13T00:44:52","slug":"raftery-takes-three-at-act-seniors-champs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2017\/05\/09\/raftery-takes-three-at-act-seniors-champs","title":{"rendered":"Raftery takes three at ACT Seniors champs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ACT tennis seniors player <strong>Narelle Raftery<\/strong> was a standout performer at the 47<sup>th<\/sup> annual ACT Seniors Championships held in April, taking all three titles in the 55\u2019s age category &#8211; singles, doubles and mixed.<\/p>\n<p>Raftery faced <strong>Wanda Howes<\/strong> in the 55\u2019s singles final, taking the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a really great competition, great weather and I found out I liked playing on clay courts, who knew,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a high level of competition, winning the singles was a great achievement\u00a0and I really enjoyed winning the mixed with my long term partner Martin Warwick from Victoria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raftery went onto explain how she is focusing on her goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy main two goals are to win a major title at Worlds and just still being able to get up everyday and stay upright.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tennis Seniors ACT successfully hosted the 47th\u00a0ACT Seniors Tennis Championships at the Canberra Tennis Centre from 14-17 April 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, competition was fierce, with competitors hailing from around Australia, featuring a handful of ACT players.<\/p>\n<p>The 60\u2019s singles draw highlighted<strong> Leonie Ainsworth<\/strong>, who won her first major singles title, taking all four round robin matches.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phil Higgs<\/strong> and <strong>Pat Moloney<\/strong> came back after a 65\u2019s tie final loss to take an impressive win in the 70\u2019s round robin.<\/p>\n<p>174 players participated across the long weekend, an increase in competitors.<\/p>\n<p>Tournament Director Pat Maloney said the event was well received.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fantastic to see an increase in competitors for our ACT tournament,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had some good tennis on show this year and a strong local presence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The ITF Grade 2 category tournament was the last competition prior to Australian selection for the World Seniors and Super-Seniors Championships.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Photo: www.itftennis.com\/seniors.com<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ACT tennis seniors player Narelle Raftery was a standout performer at the 47th annual ACT Seniors Championships held in April, taking all three titles in the 55\u2019s age category &#8211; singles, doubles and mixed.
