{"id":10933,"date":"2017-04-11T10:37:52","date_gmt":"2017-04-11T00:37:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=10933"},"modified":"2017-04-11T10:37:52","modified_gmt":"2017-04-11T00:37:52","slug":"social-tennis-day-to-support-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2017\/04\/11\/social-tennis-day-to-support-home","title":{"rendered":"Social tennis day to support &#8216;Home&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canberra tennis group <strong>Ladies Midweek Tennis<\/strong> are set to host their annual Charity Day on <strong>Thursday 4 May<\/strong>, all\u00a0proceeds set to go to <strong>HOME<\/strong>, who provide 24-hour local support accommodation for people living with a mental illness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HOME<\/strong> is the initiative of <strong>Father Day<\/strong> who lived in Sydney and worked on the streets with people with mental illness. The not for profit charity organisation has 19 units in Queanbeyan\u00a0and was the first of its kind to open in Australia. <strong>HOME<\/strong> also supports the ACT and surrounding district.<\/p>\n<p>The range of mental illnesses suffered by the residents is from medium to high. Each resident has their own one bedroom self contained unit, the <strong>HOME<\/strong> team providing vital support to residents.<\/p>\n<p>Ladies Midweek Tennis\u00a0player and manager of<strong> HOME,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Anne Pratt<\/strong>,\u00a0said it\u2019s a real privilege to see people\u2019s lives change, as they become more involved in their community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We work with each resident to help them believe in themselves again, to understand they can succeed, that they can function,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And we encourage them to become involved in the community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>HOME residents pay rent and pay for their own utilities including electricity and phone. A number of residents go to TAFE, work part-time, one has begun university and others are involved in different activities in the community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s very much about enabling people who have a medical illness to take responsibility for these things,\u201d said Pratt.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0091d2\"><strong>How can you help?<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Put your name down for the day, including social tennis and lunch, and buy some raffle tickets. All the proceeds from the day will go to <strong>HOME<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #e10073\">Ladies Midweek Charity Day 2017<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>WHEN: <\/strong>Thursday 4\u00a0May 2017<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHERE:<\/strong>\u00a0Belconnen Tennis Club and Melba Tennis Club<\/p>\n<p><strong>TENNIS:<\/strong> Participants may play at Belconnen or Melba and enter in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ladies\u2019, Men\u2019s or mixed doubles<\/li>\n<li>Single entries or with a partner<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>LUNCH:<\/strong>\u00a0will be held at Belconnen Tennis Club<\/p>\n<p><strong>COST<\/strong>: $25 for tennis and a sausage sizzle and salad lunch<\/p>\n<p>Tea and coffee will be provided, however if you would like something else please bring your own drinks.<\/p>\n<p>Prizes for the raffle gratefully received.
