{"id":10186,"date":"2016-12-07T13:21:31","date_gmt":"2016-12-07T02:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/?p=10186"},"modified":"2016-12-07T15:02:49","modified_gmt":"2016-12-07T04:02:49","slug":"athletes-sizzle-as-season-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2016\/12\/07\/athletes-sizzle-as-season-begins","title":{"rendered":"Athletes sizzle as season begins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Australian Summer of Tennis has begun with two of our Canberra 12\/u boys, <strong>Charlie Camus<\/strong> and <strong>Daniel Macdonald<\/strong>\u00a0winning two titles each.<\/p>\n<p>Charlie Camus had a great win at the <strong>2016 Shoalhaven Junior Championships\u00a0<\/strong>defeating fifth seed <strong>Michael Tam <\/strong>(NSW) in straight sets. He also took the <strong>2016 Wagga Junior Open<\/strong> singles title, defeating second seed <strong>Pavle Popovich<\/strong> (NSW)\u00a0in straight sets.\u00a0 ACT player <strong>Baden Arellano Gerrard <\/strong>also performed well in Sholhaven, making the semifinals.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel McDonald (ACT) has had recent doubles success, taking two 12\/u JT boys doubles titles &#8211; the 2016 Wagga Junior Open partnering <strong>Maxwell Prest <\/strong>(NSW), and in Shoalhaven alongside NSW player <strong>Jeorge Collins <\/strong>(NSW).<\/p>\n<p>Based on the results of the recent ACT Super 10\u2019s competition, Canberra\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Aliyah Dywer,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Hugh Taylor,<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Marqaylar Tere\u00a0<\/strong>have been selected to represent the ACT at the first Grand Slam of 2017, where they will compete against finalists from all eight states. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/act\/news\/2016\/12\/06\/canberra-super-10s-selected-for-finals\">More<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>DECEMBER SHOWDOWN AND AO PLAY-OFF<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The December Showdown has returned for another year to Melbourne Park, a two-week tennis carnival headlined by the Australian Open 2017 Play-off. More than 1500 matches will be played to find out who is the best player across each age group. The 16-day carnival runs from 3-18 December with junior matches commencing at 9am (and at 8.30am from 9-11 December).<\/p>\n<p>14\/u girls second seed<strong> Annerly Poulos<\/strong> (ACT) has made her way to the final round, due to take place on Thursday 7 December.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/news\/2016\/12\/06\/gadecki-poulos-on-track-for-14s-final-clash\">As predicted<\/a>, Annerly will face fellow young up and comer and number 1 seed, <strong>Olivia Gadecki<\/strong> (QLD). Australian Open Play-Off matches will be the highlight of the finals week\u2019s play, with matches kicking off at 10am from Monday, 12 December and 11am for the semifinals and finals.<\/p>\n<p>The play-off will see Canberra player <strong>Alison Bai<\/strong> battle it out for a golden ticket into the Australian Open against some of the best players from around Australia.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time this year a women\u2019s double pairing will have their chance to earn entry into Australian Open 2017 as part of\u00a0the December Showdown. Starting on the final Monday, eight women\u2019s teams will compete against each other for the right to return to Melbourne Park in January, with the final played out\u00a0on Friday 16 December.
