Canberra, ACT, 8 January 2019 | Asher Packman

Harry Bourchier has caused a major upset at the East Hotel Canberra Challenger on Tuesday taking out top seed Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain to book a place in the third round.

The Tasmanian needed three sets to overcome the world No.73 and post his first Top 100 victory, winning 7-6(4) 1-6 6-3.

“I’ve been struggling a bit with injury so I’m really happy to even play today. The win was very unexpected,” Bourchier said. “It’s really good for my confidence so I’m just going to try and build on this one and take as much away from it as I can.”

The 22-year-old spent some time living in Canberra and said he was used to conditions. “I probably acclimatised a bit better than he did,” he said. “I think my three-set match in the first round also helped as well as it was his first match today.”

Bourchier will now face Argentine Renzo Olivo for a maiden place in an ATP Challenger quarterfinal. “I don’t really know what to expect but I’m going to go in with an open mindset and just compete,” he said.

Tuesday also saw France’s Sadio Doumbia oust Marc Polmans, the fifth seed, 6-3 6-4.  The Victorian has had great success in Canberra previously but could not find a way past the solid Doumbia.

Queenslander Michael Look and Melbourne’s Matthew Romios also fell short in their second-round encounters, losing to seeds Tristan Lamasine (No.11) of France and Tak Khunn Wang (No.15) respectively.

In the battle of the potential next generation stars, Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz emerged victorious over teen Chun Hsin Tseng of Taipei 6-4 6-4.

Australians Andrew Harris, Bradley Mousley – alongside Bourcheir – will all take to the court on Wednesday.
