The CENTRAL Institute of Technology

The CENTRAL Institute of Technology, in partnership with Tennis West, is giving students the chance to combine academic study with their passion for the game.

Students enrol in the Certificate IV in Sport (Development) and are then released twice a week for tennis sessions aimed at both improving their skills and giving them a foot on the coaching ladder.

“The Cert IV course is only a year long so it’s a pretty quick way to get training that can lead to higher level qualifications. I think it is great to gain a nationally recognised qualification in coaching on top of my academic studies.” said Damian Hansen who already coaches at Cottesloe.

Ryan Popovsky, Tennis West’s development officer, said the organisation was excited about helping young people forge a career in sport. “The benefit to us is that we have access to a talented group of new coaches who can help develop the sport,” he said.

As well as spending time on tennis, students also study subjects including sports science, strength and conditioning, event management and psychology. The Certificate IV qualification is a pathway to either employment or to higher education.
