Indigenous Tennis

Tennis West in conjunction with the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR)�and Tennis Australia (TA), currently conduct a state-wide indigenous tennis program.

The Indigenous Tennis Program aims to:

  • To increase active participation of indigenous people in sport and physical activities through tennis
  • To develop skills and provide knowledge transfer through recognised accreditation programs
  • To provide access to facilities and equipment appropriate to the needs of indigenous tennis players
  • To promote and encourage the migration of indigenous children from school based tennis activities to local clubs in the area.

The program targets different areas each year covering metropolitan perth and regional WA. Some of the program activities include:

  • Tennis in schools programs
  • Club linking programs (participants are encouraged to continue tennis at their local Tennis West Affiliated Clubs)
  • Annual Harmony Day tournament held at the State Tennis Centre: 14 March 2012. (For more information or to enter your school, please contact Paul Oldfield on 08 6462 8318
  • Teachers are provided with resources to continue tennis within the school. They are also invivted to attend an Orientation to Coaching Course.
  • “Building the capacity of the local community”
  • Offering Officiating courses and Coaching courses

Funding is available for all Indigenous tennis players are available through the Depoartment of Sport and Recreation and the KidSport initiative to apply for on www.clubsonline.dsr.wa.gov.au/kisport
