Talent Search & Development

Talent Search and Development is a joint program between Tennis Australia and Tennis West. It has been established to identify and develop athletes between the ages of 7 and 12 years old.  The program consists of a Talent Development Squad, Match Play days and Talent Development Camps. The day to day operations of the program are run by Tennis West employee Andrew Roberts.

Talent Development Squad

By design the Talent Development Squad brings together 8 to12 of the most talented u/12 year olds in a centralised environment with the aim to produce NA or TWA scholarship holders.  The squad trains at the State Tennis Centre three times per week and offers holistic development through the use of Tennis Australia’s core skills and drills, along with strength and conditioning. Athletes are selected through their Australian Ranking, results at State and National events and can be recommended by their private coach.

Match Play

Tennis West offers a match play session each week where talented athletes are invited to participate in competitive matches within the Talent Development Squad. Private Coaches are invited to attend these sessions where they can provide feedback to their players.

Talent Development Camps

Talent Development Camps are held four times per year in both metro and regional areas. The camps run for 2 – 3 days and include various components: a guest speaker, strength and conditioning, fitness testing, match play and professional development sessions for athletes, parents and coaches. Talent Development Coaches are invited to play an active role in each camp and work alongside Tennis West staff. These coaches are also invited to bring their most talented and passionate players to the camp. Selection for camps is based around Australian Ranking, scouting at tournaments and through Hotshots events.

Talent Development Coaches

Tennis Australia recently established a program that further recognises excellent and passionate coaches who specialise in the development of players under 12 years of age.  Coaches who meet Tennis Australia’s criteria in this program are labelled a ‘Talent Development Coach’
