Seventeen-year-old Storm Sanders (Safety Bay, WA) won her first Junior ITF Grade 1 title at the 23rd Mitsubishi Lancer Junior International in Manila, Philippines on Sunday.
The West Australian won six matches in a row, defeating several seeded players including top seed Elizaveta Kulichkova (RUS), Oleksandra Korashvili (UKR) and Nao Hibino (JPN) along the way, before overcoming fourth seed Anna Tyulpa (RUS) to win the championship, 4-6 6-3 6-1.
In the boys’ singles final, Jordan Thompson (Cherrybrook, NSW) went down to No.1 seed and in-form Nikola Milojevic (SRB) 6-0 7-5.
Thompson, however, scored a victory in the boys’ doubles, when he and Jay Andrijic (South Penrith, NSW) defeated No.4 seeds Siyu Liu (CHN) and Lukas Mugevicius (LTU) 6-2 6-2 to win the title.
In a thrilling girls’ doubles final, No.2 seeds Abbie Myers (Georges Hall, NSW) and her partner Barbora Krejcikova (CZE) narrowly lost to Mami Adachi and Hikari Yamamoto of Japan 6-3 2-6 [10-4].
Sanders’ win marks the end of a four-week Australian Asia ITF tour for some of our juniors. The group will return home on Tuesday.
